Not that I'd have an extra $9000 - $10,000 to fork over, but a 35mm ASPH Noctilux would be a very interesting lens.

I would have trouble forking over the price of a small car for a lens, but every piece of my Leica gear has cost more than many of the cars I've owned in the past. As they say, "It's only money."

Hey, new ad campaign: Leica: After all, its only money! :D

As I said on the rumour thread - we might all find out something a little more concrete on September 15th. I understand that (certainly in the UK) there is an NDA out from Leica for signing which expires on that date.

I would expect a press release or info released to dealers.

Kenneth--I'm with you, but here we both are reading the thread.

And where else would we find such delightful quotes as Doug's:

I figure that if my car is worth more than my camera my priorities are out of order :D

Of course! Your camera bag & its contents should always exceed the value of your car!

Again, I call for Leica to adopt a new ad campaign slogan - "Leica. Hey, it's only money!" :D

Or to borrow from the Fabulously Furry Freak Brothers*,

"Leicas will get you through times of no money better than money will get you through times of no Leicas."

Speaking of which...

I'm sorry but I don't see the point in this.

...Because I get a quid (or 2 US dollars or 1.333 Euros) from each forum member for each correct prediction I make....

8^)

I was wondering... how many people here follow the "don't ask/don't tell" policy regarding the price of their gear :D

I agree this thread is pointless, but very amusing nevertheless

Dark, nothing wrong with "Hey, it's only money." But Doug has it in a nutshell! I mean, it's not just money, it's MONEY.

Leica should make this their slogan. Just leave off the smiley and insert the Red Dot.

  • 3 weeks later...

I would definitely predict a MF reflex to replace the R line. Probably 6 x 4.5 with a range of lenses possibly based on the old Bronica type system. It would be nice if they designed in a 35 x 24 mm "crop" usage of the sensor that would allow R lenses to be used as a sop to the loyal band of R users.......which includes me!

In my view Leica have to go this way as the DMR with it's 16 bit back produces superior files to most other integrated type cameras including the M8. The only way therefore for Leica to improve on the DMR concept is to stay with a 16 bit digital back type reflex system. This not to say that the resolution of some other full frame digital cameras equals or in some cases are superior to the R8/9 with DMR. But very few indeed if any match the gradation of colours that the DMR can produce.

As far as I know there are no integrated reflex digital cameras producing 16 bits per colour quality files. Even the Mamiya ZD integrated MF camera only produces 12 bits per colour files. The Phase One digital backs and virtually all other MF digital backs produce 16 bit RAW files.

If we gasped at the price of the DMR back, order some oxygen now for when we learn of the prices that Leica may charge for such a system!

I would say "bravo!" if the new lens are kind of MD (for M-Digital).

A Cron 24 MD could make me (and my wallet) quite nervous.

Digital-only M lenses would be a big mistake, IMHO.

I'm hoping that Leica come up with something completely off the wall, and unexpected. Something to make us all go "Wow!"

Leica has a lot of expertise on building smart mirror lifting systems, starting with the famous "Kurbelschleife" which pulls the mirror back before flipping it up. Now if they were able to build a (close to) 645 size viewfinder/shutter/electronics body which would take a front adapter for either R lenses or new MF lenses, and an interchangable back in either 135 size or MF sensor, they would have an unique modular system and a niche....It would even be a bit like the DMR with its "see-around" matte screen in the 135 configuration- one of the major advantages of that system. It would not be cheap, but the connection to Sinar makes it slightly more conceivable.
