carylwithay Posted August 9, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 9, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been getting dark black spots on my images from the M8. I will clean the sensor but i wonder if that causes black spots. Any ideas? Caryl

carylwithay Posted August 9, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted August 9, 2008 Thank you Steve. But does dust make black AND white spots? I hope it is only dust. I will clean the senson with my rocket blower. Caryl
ho_co Posted August 9, 2008 Share #4 Posted August 9, 2008 Caryl-- Remember, whatever color a speck may be to the eye, you're seeing its shadow on the sensor. So it's obscuring light and leaving a dark spot. As Steve said, it's most likely dust: Clean the sensor. (Don't know about white spots. They should also disappear with cleaning. Keep us posted if not!)
carylwithay Posted August 9, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted August 9, 2008 DONE! CLEAN AT LAST. Thank you so much. I have a powerful blower that works like a flashlight. That did it. I was sorried my camera was broken again. Caryl
chris_tribble Posted August 10, 2008 Share #6 Posted August 10, 2008 Caryl - don't forget that a blower simply displaces the dust and it can come back quickly. You're much better off with a charged brush system like Visible Dust which actually removes the dust. VERY easy to use - a bit expensive at the beginning, but then no consumables to use up... carylwithay Posted August 10, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted August 10, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thank you Chris. I have a gadget called InnoDesk that is intended for cleaning delicate machines like the inside of computers. It looks like a flashlight, sort of, and has a battery operated air stream that comes out a very small opening. It is not strong like canned air and it is nothing but air. So far it really works well.I will get something else if it does not do the job. Caryl
stunsworth Posted August 10, 2008 Share #8 Posted August 10, 2008 Avoid canned air. The propellent in some types can cause problems. My first line of attack when cleaning the sensor is to use a hand held 'hurricane' blower. That removes the dust 95% of the time. The Visible Dust range of products offer a good means of wet cleaning where necessary, they make a swab that's the perfect size for the M8's 1.3 cropped sensor. carylwithay Posted August 10, 2008 Author Share #9 Posted August 10, 2008 Thank you. This is NOT canned air. It is a battery operated fan. So far, it has done a fine job. on all mycameras. Caryl
jaapv Posted August 10, 2008 Share #10 Posted August 10, 2008 I find Giotto's Rocket Blower a very good product. Rocket-air The next step is the Arctic Butterfly, and after that, if needed, swabbing the sensor using Sensor Swabs 1.3x and Eclipse2. I would like to emphasize that it is essential to remove all loose particles with the blower or the butterfly before wet cleaning!!! It is not a good idea to drag a miniscule sand grain over the sensor with the swab.
carylwithay Posted August 10, 2008 Author Share #11 Posted August 10, 2008 I have a large Rocket also but this battery powered blower does a better job. So far i have not had to use a wet cleaner. That would scare me. Caryl
