patashnik Posted August 2, 2008 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, bargains, I'm sure not. But ever since purchasing the M8, I've been happy as can be since I can now use the same set of lenses for both analog and digital. So, I'm gonna order me a MP, but I want one with the 35/50/90mm frame lines, so it will have to be á la carte. But does it matter at all where I buy it? I'm talking USA here, but the prices should basically be the same, or?
Advertisement Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Hi patashnik, Take a look here MP á la carte: Any bargains out there?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
topoxforddoc Posted August 2, 2008 Share #2 Posted August 2, 2008 The one you want is called the M2! 35/50/90 single framelines, buttery smooth action and lovely build quality. Oh and a good one is a 1000 bucks or less! Is that a bargain or not? Mine cost me 600 bucks, UK customs (another 150 bucks) and 150 bucks for a service. Good luck, Charlie
earleygallery Posted August 2, 2008 Share #3 Posted August 2, 2008 I agree with Charlie

Good luck, Charlie Already have one But as much as I like it, I want that built-in light meter. And with the M8, I was able to sell all my Canon dSLR stuff, so I actually (for once!) have the cash to spend. If I'm ever going to get an analog Leica new in box, this is the time. earleygallery Posted August 2, 2008 Share #5 Posted August 2, 2008 £2000 is a lot to pay for a built in meter, but you can't go wrong buying such a fine camera. I'm sure a la carte prices are set by the factory so yes, you should get the same price from any dealer. What other options will you go for though......... andybarton Posted August 2, 2008 Share #7 Posted August 2, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Two grand of any currency buys a lot of Leicameter...
earleygallery Posted August 2, 2008 Share #8 Posted August 2, 2008 Very nice. I think I'd go for the 'vulcanite' style covering though, otherwise I'd choose the same. Andy, this Leicameter thing you have going on is just not healthy. Get over it!!
thomasw_ Posted August 3, 2008 Share #9 Posted August 3, 2008 You might like a MP with a DAG frameline removal. For it looks to me like a standard MP .72x with the 28/75/135 frameline removed. Much less to get a MP and have this done for a couple hundred loonies then to buy a la carte. Just a consideration.
topoxforddoc Posted August 3, 2008 Share #10 Posted August 3, 2008 Already have one But as much as I like it, I want that built-in light meter. And with the M8, I was able to sell all my Canon dSLR stuff, so I actually (for once!) have the cash to spend. If I'm ever going to get an analog Leica new in box, this is the time. After a while, you get used to shooting without a meter. With B&W emulsions, there's a fair bit of latitude. Using Sunny 16 and a bit of experience, I get by most of the time without my handheld meter. Charlie
Pangur Ban Posted August 3, 2008 Share #11 Posted August 3, 2008 I'd ask them to fit black flash mount too, if you're going to the trouble of a la carte. Some people have done it, though its not listed as an option. May as well get rid of all the chrome if you really like black.
wattsy Posted August 3, 2008 Share #12 Posted August 3, 2008 You might like a MP with a DAG frameline removal. For it looks to me like a standard MP .72x with the 28/75/135 frameline removed. Much less to get a MP and have this done for a couple hundred loonies then to buy a la carte. Just a consideration. I was thinking that. The á la carte premium seems like a lot to pay if all you are interested in is the reduced framelines on what is otherwise a stock MP. A like-new condition MP can be had for £1500 ($3000 US) and the frameline removal shouldn't cost very much.
peter_n Posted August 3, 2008 Share #13 Posted August 3, 2008 There's a new MP3 body on eBay for $5250. You might fancy that.
patashnik Posted August 3, 2008 Author Share #14 Posted August 3, 2008 Thank you for the replies! I didn't know that you could remove the unwanted framelines - it would certainly help my wallet a lot if I could get a used MP and have the frames cleaned up. Hmmm. Descisions. wizard Posted August 4, 2008 Share #15 Posted August 4, 2008 I didn't know that you could remove the unwanted framelines - ... Well, in fact you cannot 'remove' unwanted framelines. What has to be done is to install a new frameline module which has just the framelines you want. But I am sure DAG and other specialized Leica repairmen can do that for much less than the premium you'd have to pay for an a la carte model. mindlessdocumentation Posted August 27, 2008 Share #16 Posted August 27, 2008 Yeah, I'd love to do a customized one too (though I'd go with black chrome finish and a 0.58 view), but the pricing is just out of control. There's no way to justify it unless you have a ton of disposable income.
