I don't have the funds for one thing, and the only thing I have collected in my life were the Esso petrol football coins from England's ill-fated World Cup campaign in 1970. However... Last Sunday one of our number, who shall remain nameless, gave me a Leicameter to try, for my M2. Now, I have a perfectly good Weston that I have used since I bought the M2 about 5 years ago, so I don't need another meter. It's just that when you fit it to the top of the camera, it just looks right - as if it belongs there. (I'm a "no-deep-pockets" one...) - Most of us are oriented to historical-very old items : this means, for instance, that the prices of "Fat Elmar 90" or "Summar rigid mount" are rather high... does anyone think to USE them ? - Many collectors like small items... I have an impressive number of filters for Elmar 50, whose prices are anyway low (even if rather rare, in some hues...).(*) - "Deep pockets" collectors really keep terribly high the prices of some bodies (oh, how I'd like to have a Leica 250..., or a Compur... ) , but, again I think none is interested in using them... - And we keep alive the heritage of this brand... even if I put together my collection without giving a dime in Leica Co. pockets, I tend to think that is someway to be credited also to us if the company is still alive... I was happy with my 50mm, swearing it would be the only lens I needed / used. I woke up this morning realizing I now have a 28, 35, 50, 75 and 90. Huh? When did THAT happen? To satisfy my collectionitis without loosing my sanity, I've decided to collect only rare and bizarre things but at cheap price... a cheap rare leica is even rare than a rare leica... like for instance : a IIIc Red Curtain + sonnar LTM T for 200$ / a IIIc sharkskin + boxed summarit + zuiko 4cm LTM for 600$... They don't get used so I should really sell them. The same thing occurred when I bouht my first Leica, a III, which came with accessories I have never used. The whole thing is catching. My personal view is that collectors buy things and keep them in cupboards or in display cases. I use all of my lenses and bodies, not all the time but they all see use, even my Jupiter 4.
