This is getting ridiculous

Please allow me to make two things clearer:

1. Although the gears that I have are still in working condition but all products have a life span, at a certain point of time, they'll break down, I'm hoping that Leica could provide a relative long term and reliable system so by the time a replacement/upgrade is due I'm still able to cope with.

2. I don't buy my gears as an investment - in fact, they are pure waste of money for what I do, but I also don't buy them for display only. I like to use them and I want to use them, if what Leica is doing will prevent me from doing so in the long term, then I must say that's a problem.

Bearing in mind that Leica will still service stuff from 70+ years ago, can easily service 20 year old R8s, nothing that they do or don't do is likely to prevent you using you stuff until you are in your box, IMHO.

Unless they go bust. Of course :)

(Or the whole world stops producing and processing film)

"Leica will tell us in 8 weeks time; whether we will like what they tell us about their plans in the DSLR segment remains to be seen.

My analysis of this statement is that Michael knows something, and he's not telling us.

What I *suspect* he knows is that there won't be a R10 at Photokina, because Leica doesn't have an R10 -- if they did, we'd be hearing rumors about beta-testing, which I assume will be fairly thorough after the M8 debacle. I *suspect* he knows that what we will get is a kind of half-assed "roadmap" for the appearance of the R10, which may be a couple of years away yet, and some ambiguous commentary on M8/M9 development.

Instead of getting involved in this thread, I thought I might go out and take some high-quality street shots with my M8, but then I thought, "Naw, I'll just sit here at my computer and slag other forum members for a while." I'm glad I did, it's much less stressful for an introvert.

Sheesh!

Irony, Alan, IRONY!!

Compare my wording to the wording in the original post.

Nikon and Canon have not revealed anything about possible upcoming models. They likely will in 7-8 weeks in Koln.

Leica has not revealed anything about possible upcoming models. They likely will in 7-8 weeks in Koln.

If you wouldn't hassle N and C about this fact, don't hassle leica.

The difference of course is that Nikon and Canon HAVE professional level digital SLR's. Why is it so difficult for people to admit that it is ridiculous for a major "35mm" camera/lens manufacturer to NOT have a full and complete professional grade SLR? And if waiting 2-3 years for that to happen is not being patient then some people in here need to "baaa" like sheep in the field.

Leica WAS a great lens and camera company. Until they can claim an entrant in the digital age with a professional quality digital SLR camera that is historical reference and not present time. And please don't bring up the DMR. They "made" it. They don't "make" it any more. So they no longer have any professional quality digital SLR's in process. Think about that instead of making excuses for that. They, at the present time, and for the past 2 years have not been making a digital SLR camera of professional quality. Read that two or three times and then continue to make excuses for a company that technically doesn't exist in the digital SLR world.

If you have been waiting that long, you can wait another 8 weeks. This IS getting ridiculous.

I was going to call this a whiny, spoiled, self-centered, 2-year-old's tantrum, but that would be an insult to my rather gentlemanly and grownup (by comparison) 2-year-old nephews.

The difference is that Nikon and Canon are selling DSLRs and do not have many customers who will have to turn elsewhere if new models don't come out soon. Both companies have a history of being competitive and introducing cutting edge cameras on a regular basis. Photographers have faith in them so they do not have to show their hand to keep people in the fold. (The open rumor of the Nikon D3x for many months has probably kept some from going to Canon's 1DsIII.)

Ever thought that maybe they don't want to exist in the digital SLR world?

I hope that they do, but it's an idea worth considering. Whatever they do, they can only ever be a niche player when compared to the mass produced Far East offerings.

IF they bring out a new digital SLR, it will have to be so radical, so different, so "out there" that it will be a paradigm shift in camera thinking, in order to create its own market. Just another dSLR (but 3x the price) will not convince anyone.

Only a niche player can do this.

I hope that they can grasp this nettle.

Sorry to tell you this but Leica isn't on your schedule. When I read posts like this I'm ashamed to be an American because it just represents what the rest of the world says about us- preachy, impatient, self centered, loud and over bearing.

That was big of you.... ..you just go to show not all Americans are like him Well said. ;)

I'd love to be proven wrong but I fail to see if there's such a niche which hasn't been explored by a camera company in the past 100 years (or even longer?). Even NASA would be satisfied with a factory spec. D2x.

I'd also love to see Leica as an independent business outliving me instead of being remembered as a legendary company who committed suicide by introducing a super duper camera either nobody bothers to use, or nobody could afford to own.

Leica could feel free to do whatever they'd like to do, while I'm only saying what I'd like them to do.

I hope everyone understand this is purely a gearhead thing, there's no need to feel uncomfortable at all.

After all, the money I've spent on Leica R stuff is not more than 40k US, which can't even buy an entry level Bimmer, here's a smiling face across the pond.

At last! It's here!! Post #74!!!

I stop ... I look around ... wait ... there's nothing here! It's just like any other post! All that waiting and anticipating and wailing and gnashing of teeth since post #48 urging #74 to arrive and it turns out to be just like any other post. :(

Ho hum, back to life as normal. Hold on though ... there's another Photokina in 2 years time ...

Pete.

I read the original post before anyone else had responded. I decided to bite my tongue as my recent responses to various threads have been taken somewhat objectionably.

Now that others have had their say I'll just add one thing.

Take some bricks, build a wall and get over it!!!!!

If you really really can't stand the fact that Leica don't have a DSLR (although you haven't mentioned the DMR) then go Nikon or Canon. Or, how about, use film?!

Leica have indicated that they will tell us more about their DSLR plans at Photokina. Can't you wait until then? If not, see above.

I'm there in September. Nurbergring, Solms (of course), Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, Leipzig and Ingolstadt and then a second visit for Photokina. Looking forward to it.

methinks Mark is a similar to many Leica 'fishernardoes' and likes a little Porsche on the side ... :)

This is so funny. You get on me for suggesting that Leica is run by Bozo's - with obvious evidence that this is so - but you attack me in the same manner. I guess you aren't capable of living in the world you preach about.

umm, Andy, spot the problem with this line. :D hehe

Unless of course you are thinking 8 years into the future.

btw, I recently got my 180/2 back from service and Solms did a magnificent job. Repaired a broken internal focusing thingy, cleaned the elements, smoothed up the focus ring feel and tuned the cams. Beautiful work. It's now as good as the eBay description said it was. :(

Installed ROM too, so I can use it to best effect with my R10.
