sdai Posted July 29, 2008 Share #81 Posted July 29, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Installed ROM too, so I can use it to best effect with my R10. I'm just curious, how do you know your 180 cron will work (as it does on the R9) on the "hypothetical" R10, Rick?
Advertisement Posted July 29, 2008 Posted July 29, 2008 Hi sdai, Take a look here This is getting ridiculous. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
peter55 Posted July 29, 2008 Share #82 Posted July 29, 2008 I think Andy is saying even when the camera eventually gets to be 20 years old Leica will still service it for you. This is not true for any other camera company is it? My take on the situation and subject of this thread is that it's a tough world out there and Leica is doing what it can to continue making lenses and cameras. I would love to start a company here in the USA for making lenses and digital cameras but it is beyond my means. I think Kodak in Rochester NY (I live in NY) has a better chance to make lenses and digital cameras than I do. What does anyone here think about the possibility of Kodak making their own lenses and high end digital cameras? (This is a rhetorical question). How many lens and camera companies exist now outside of Asia? Only a few. To be honest not only is Lieica still making lenses and digital cameras but they are still recognized a a quality camera system manufacturer everywhere in the world. I am absolutly sure that they wish to cintinue. They are doing what they can, it's not easy is it? -Peter
peterm10 Posted July 29, 2008 Share #83 Posted July 29, 2008 Sorry to tell you this but Leica isn't on your schedule. When I read posts like this I'm ashamed to be an American because it just represents what the rest of the world says about us- preachy, impatient, self centered, loud and over bearing. YEP! I agree. get a grip man. This is a small company, not NIkon or Canon. How would YOU finance a multi million dollar technology development program? Well Leica has the same problem. How many lens and camera companies exist now outside of Asia? Only a few... The US probably has the most advanced optical companies in the world, but they are mostly making optics for reconnaissance, space, military, scientific, engineering, commercial and specialized applications. And consider Leica Microsystems. They manufacture equipment in 7 countries. They are made up of various companies that merged with it earlier. Such as Cambridge Optical (England), Baush and Lomb Instruments (US), Spencer Optical (US), C. Reichert (Austria), Wild Heerbrugg (Swiss). You can see how small the camera division was in all of this and why it got spun off. http://hightech.gza.ch/portrait/files/raw/00014638-leica_history.pdf Once upon a time I owned a new Zeiss microscope. I called the Zeiss microscope rep to order a part. In conversation I said that Washington DC must be a very good area for microscope sales with NIH (National Institutes of Health) and all kinds of other medical research facilities here. She told me that Zeiss has a rep dedicated just to NIH. Then consider all of the microscopes used in surgery and chip production and what they cost. Leica Microsystems now is a subsidiary of Donaher Corp. which is a US company. Donaher controls a lot of other companies in various divisions. sdai Posted July 29, 2008 Share #86 Posted July 29, 2008 Folks at Leica must be treating this forum as a great amusement. Instead of bringing some real pressure on them to deliver/improve a product, these threads always end up with members bitching to each other.

adan Posted July 29, 2008 Share #88 Posted July 29, 2008 At least the thread's title remained accurate throughout.... But sdai, this thread was never about Leica DELIVERING a product, it was a rant about information flow. Someone demanding that the Leica CEO (who owns 96% of the company) owed HIM (who owns zippity-do-dah) an explanation of what Leica was planning. "I'm NOT high-maintenance," said Meg Ryan in "When Harry Met Sally." "I just want what I want the way I want it."

vikasmg Posted July 29, 2008 Share #90 Posted July 29, 2008 .That said, any new MF or AF R lenses that are introduced in the future will be very expensive, so if you are a bit of a risk taker, look to buy the lenses you want off of the new or used market now because they will appreciate rapidly once the Digital R is announced. I did so this year, so I will either look smart or very dumb. That would seem to assume than the next Leica SLR will not use autofocus....
leicagator Posted July 29, 2008 Share #91 Posted July 29, 2008 If you want new gear every half a year - go and buy Nikons and Canons. If you want "Leica" - buy what they offer or wait... You expect to be informed about new products before Photokina - why, can't you wait another 7 weeks. If you can't, look somewhere else. You have spent a fortune in the past for Leica products and fear that they will not continue or service your stuff - ask yourself how many current competitors offer the service Leica still offers. You think you can ridicule a small German niche company owned by an Austrian Aficionado - go for it. You will feel better in your poor little life of your own and - even better - can express your feelings to a huge crowd in this forum that will be impressed by your greatness. Do you think your opinion matters - of course not, because the level of many posts hopefully has already kept many Leica reps out of the forum. Will Leica "die" then - who knows. However, you have many other manufactures with great associated forums in which you can torture others with your great business and market knowledge. ... rick_dykstra Posted July 29, 2008 Share #92 Posted July 29, 2008 This forum (including this thread) is wonderful. The spirit, the interest, the fascination shown here, for photography and for Leica, is inspirational. The trick is to not get offended and I'm sure the folk at Leica are never offended by what happens here. Interested - yes, but not offended. Today I had a good look at my last two rolls of Fuji trannies taken with R8, with 50 and 180 Summicrons and a brassy black paint MP and its glassy eyed friends Nocti, Summi and Lux. Geepers creepers - they're bloody gorgeous. If you're feeling grumpy about waiting for news, get out and shoot some nice film. And if there's no news - go shoot some more. As I sit here listening to Cold Chisel playing a live version of 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' I think the thing to do is enjoy the Leica's you've got before you wear out. 'Cause you'll surely wear out before they do!

However, you have many other manufactures with great associated forums in which you can torture others with your great business and market knowledge. ... A HUGE crowd. You are drowning in your own Leica sheepdom. Leica is losing SLR customers every day. What is it with you guys pretending that Leica is a hobby company that doesn't need to meet market demands and doesn't need to stay competitive in the market to exist? Some of you act like by defending Leica's management you are the protector of Leica rather than a customer. Dr. Kaufman did not start or invent Leica. He bailed Leica out. Now he must show that he can manage Leica. Isn't he the man that hired Mr. Lee. The same Mr. Lee that many in here blame for the delays? 10 years ago Leica was coming out with new SLR lenses and cameras. What have they been doing the last 2 years? I love my Leica equipment. Use it every day in my work. It is not jewelry to me. It is not an investment to me. It is equipment. Some of you can pretend that Leica is just this little itty bitty company that needs your protection if you want. When it fact, what it needs, is some intelligent and creative management and new production to keep up with the time. Leica didn't get where they are because they were 5 years behind the times. They got where they "were" because they were innovative (introducing 35mm format), built very high quality lenses and were commercially competitive within their abilities to build a steady stream of lenses and cameras. Go ahead and watch Leica be mismanaged along with Contax and Pentax and Polaroid. This doesn't need to happen with Leica. But it will surely happen if all the sheep just sing their songs while Rome burns in the wind of competitive incompetence.
