Dan, Do you know what they say about guys who carry around an enormous hunk of glass? Seriously, only the first shot works for me..., and it works very well. If it were MY shot, I'd crop out the yellow car on the right and make this a study in rad, white and black. But, as I didn't take it... Personally, I prefer the 50 ASPH rendition for textures, especially with cars. Did you catch this one on the old Forum? At least for me, there is insufficient technical or organic interest in the other shots. That first one was damn clever though with the plane of sharp focus on the wheels. This is how I would present #1, but obviously we have suffered some massive compression losses between the original image, 1st posting and my crop. Dan, keep 'em, a'comin... Pete. I'm not a big Nocti fan (understatement), but those shapes in the OOF are nicely arranged and give the car context. Only the yellow car distracts IMO. Part of what makes me love that lens is the vignetting. When I started shooting lots of B&W in college for the university newspaper - I did lots of burning & dodging. I haven't printed in years, but the Noct gives me a look a like. Second set is 90 Summicron APO Asph. Orange Bimmer was a BMW Mobile Tradition project : BMW Builds a New 2002 I wasn't even sure about posting # 1, I'm usually not one to post whole car photos. I like the details better. William, as far as the focus on the wheels - I suspect I was using the Maserati sysmbol as my point. I do agree with yellow being distracting in the background. Ya think I'd have learned that by now! There was a tendancy, not as strong now, to present shots of cars that looked as if they could be used in a 'for sale' ad., striaghtforward shots of the whole car with messy backgrounds and everything in focus. I could point to examples but I don't think it would be fair on the original posters. They seemed to me to be shots by car fanatics for other car fanatics, and if you weren't a car 'anorak' they held little interest at all. Here however you've gone for the alternative approach of getting close and showing individual details. In my opinion this is usually the most successful approach when shooting at public events as it's all too easy for the background to become very messy and you resort to describing the images as a 'record shot'. Now a record shot may be interesting to a fanatic, but to the general public it just looks like a simple snapshot with no attempt to add any creativity. I agree that the first one is the messiest, William is right, the car to the right is disctracting. Crop that out and I think the out of focus people add a little to the shot.
