Hi Ivar,

Did not get you. You mean the new body R10 will take the current R lenses or not? Or it will not take but there will be new lenses for R10?

The R10 was not discussed at the meeting in Hessenpark that Ivar and I attended. Everything that is known or not about the R10 is still speculation.

If Canon and Nikon can produce digital full frame bodies that allow the use of existing lenses I see no reason why Leica can't do the same - they have the offset micro lens technique sorted thanks to their experience with the M8, after all.

I completely agree. Canon and Nikon can do this because they have designed a new body, and not taken an existing film body and added the digital back. Therefore they can design the shutter box to suit.

Thanks but what was discussed at the meeting then? What was the main purpose/agenda of the meeting?

The lenses must be good enough for 24x36 though...

Not necessarily Andy. Both Canon and now Nikon have found that many of their pro lenses, whist more than adequate for 135 film, are not up to the sensor performance capability of full frame digital. The digital images show up the softer edge definition and I think that it is something to do with the rows of photcites on the edges of the sensor, but I am not technical in this discipline.

However, many may remember that a few users of the first full frame digital Canons used some of the Leica R glass to overcome this problem!! In fact some members on this forum did just that, and I think that Guy Mancuso led the pack with this trend until the DMR was introduced!

As sensors improve, I can understand why Leica may want to ensure that their lenses are up to the job of rendering perfectly sharp images. Add auto focus capability and a whole new Leica ball game of lens design becomes necessary. Tough on users like myself who have a largish armoury of R glass though!

During the Forum Meeting in Germany, Leica confirmed that there will be no new R lenses presented at the Photokina this fall. ....

Doesn't it mean then there will be R10 with the same Leica Current lenses?:)

Geez,,,,,,why is everyone getting their undies in a knot over this possible 'comment'? What happened to the infamous non disclosure agreement?

It all continues to be nothing more than rumors, rumors, rumors. Sure, our existing R lenses won't be usable, yah, sure, okay.

Sorry to say this, but this info was already out last September and debated here to death. And same as now, also back in September 2007 lot of people here did not like the thought that existing R glass would not be reuseable on a future R10. And they almost killed the messenger (me in this case).

Truth is:

1) If it is now really becoming a larger sensor than 24x36 then R lenses will not be fully useable in FF on this sensor, as they only will work in a cropped area of 24x36. I think this is pretty obvious. In this case also the lens mount will be most probably different.

2) Also future lenses will be AF and current R glass will be only useable MF. And AF speaks very much for a new lens mount per se!

3) If there will be an adapter only future will tell.

Just calm down and wait till August, then we should get first informations. Worse case will be during PK 2008.

Well, what we were told is that there will be no new R lenses presented at Photokina, and I don`t know any more than that. If I am allowed to speculate a bit, it would in my judgement be foolish to launch a camera bodies and no lenses for it, so if we indeed accept that an R10 is coming, it must take existing lenses. We do not know for a fact that an R10 is coming, but should this indeed be the case, in my opinion the system will be still born if Leica cannot dig into the existing pool of R lens owners.

Leicas people were very reluctant to give away information, but what I did hear was that there would be no new R lenses at this point. There was no information that an R10 is coming, but if it indeed will be launced the only reasonable conclusion is that it must take current lenses.

Why so? Why not doing like Nikon?

Because they already need a larger mount I guess for a larger sensor. So then why not do a completely new design, which is optimized for everything - new larger sensor, AF, digital,...

What I remember from interviews (I think they were even with Dr. Kaufmann) they talked about working on some 20 new lenses or so. These cannot have been all M lenses. So I assume what you are referring to is, they will not be able to show the new lenses, but they will show the new DSLR range and give away some information about compatibility etc.

If they do not even bring this, then I think better forget abot any new things from Leica in the next years :(

If that's true, then the R system is dead in the water (as is Leica). Ignoring your entire base of legacy users would be insane, particularly as you are unlikely to convert many new users, due to the price for the R10 and a whole set of new lenses.

Charlie

I agree. But - this will not happen.

Because they already need a larger mount...

The Nikon D3 is full frame and works fine with the existing Nikon mount does not it?

And the R mount is larger than the Nikon one already so why changing this good mount i still don't understand sorry.
