stuny Posted June 13, 2008 Share #3 Posted June 13, 2008 Pete - Excellent composition, and an initially funny. as I look at it more, though, it makes me think of bones bleaching in the sun. Marquinius Posted June 14, 2008 Share #4 Posted June 14, 2008 Pete, First pic is excellent, second made me stop and wonder: how much power actually is hidden in that engine, it being a very robust 8 cylinder? Nothing fancy, obviously a rough racing car. Marco

Marquinius Posted June 15, 2008 Share #6 Posted June 15, 2008 Chuck an aero engine into a car that weighs nothing- result very, very fast, What? An aero engine? Me being a (sports) fly boy that's kind of rough. But OK, it is rather an interesting combination and I'm sure with the weather in Holland and all, it'll have a bigger chance of being run than flying. On second thought: there will be a law somewhere either forbidding it OR taxing it. :D

On second thought: there will be a law somewhere either forbidding it OR taxing it. :D There are quite a few of these aero-engine specials around in the UK, it is still possible to build one up and get it registered and on the road. Most of them date from the 1930's though there was a resurgence in the 50's. There were a couple yesterday racing with Zeppelin engines, a couple with very big V-twins, a DH Moth engine and the 24ltr 12 cyl Napier Bentley (that one does NOT go on the road)! topoxforddoc Posted June 15, 2008 Share #8 Posted June 15, 2008 Pete, The first shot is just so reminscent of the VSCC! Those boys are serious racers - no Hooray Henrys there! Charlie
Marquinius Posted June 17, 2008 Share #9 Posted June 17, 2008 the 24ltr 12 cyl Napier Bentley (that one does NOT go on the road)! Mannnn ... that would go OFF the road, even without wings. Must visit one of them races next time I'm across ... any of them near the South East? Say, about 50 miles from Manston/Dover? Would be a thrill to pop over in my little plane. Marco I think you can fly into Goodwood; aka RAF Westhampnett (sp?). Tickets are not cheap though, and you would have to dress a Charles Lindberg. andybarton Posted June 17, 2008 Share #11 Posted June 17, 2008 What about the Rolls Royce that had a Merlin engine? Or did I dream that? (In the 70s probably - alleged to have caught fire in Scandinavia, somewhere...)

(In the 70s probably - alleged to have caught fire in Scandinavia, somewhere...) There were a few of those (even one down my road, according to the old boy opposite). I think the one that burned was some dreadful American Pony-Car type creation. Evidently our former neighbours was built on a lengthened 20'/30s Phantom. Must have been a bit of a handful, even without the superchargers.
