Another Leica equipment stolen

This is the kind of post nobody likes to read (and to post), but I just wanted to warn everyone about the importance of being very careful about our Leica equipment.

Yesterday afternoon, mine was stolen out of my car. I was driving back from Madrid to France, and decided to make a small detour to take pictures of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao. While heading back to the highway, I was waiting in a traffic jam when two youngsters on a motorcycle warned me about something wrong in my right rear wheel. My (new) tire was flat. After changing it, I noticed that my bag containing the whole Leica outfit had disappeared, along with m a leather pouch containing my wallet, driving license, credit card, cell phone and a beuatiful Mont Blanc ball pen.

At the garage where I had to change both back tires they told me that many north africans use to put a knife in the tires of foreign cars and "operate" swiftly while drivers took care of their cars.

Today, my hatred is difficult to conceal, even though I think this feeling useless. I feel like excluded of this forum through which I met more than wonderful people who taught me many things...

Just for information, I want to publish the serial numbers of all that has been stolen, though I don't think it may help in any way. But who knows...

Camera Leica R9 anthracite N° 2925054

Digital-Modul R N° 1001064

Lens Vario-Elmarit 28-90mm f2.8-4.5 N° 03970394

Lens Elmarit 19mm f*:2.8 (recent) N° 03970756

Lens M-Telyt 500mm f*:8 (mirror) N° 081-656.008-005 ou 3221220

Lens Apo-Telyt 180 mm f*:3.4 N° 3072840

Except for the Apo-Telyt which I bought 23 years ago and the mirror lens that I found for 700 € and that had obviously never been taken out of its box, evrything was new.

At home remained the 60mm Macro-Elmarit, the last thing I own from Leica. Very kindly, my brother offered me his Canon EOS 30D. There seem to be an adaptor with which I could use the 60mm. Can someone give me the reference of the adaptor ?

Thanks in advance

Gérard

That´s really sad ! Sorry to hear this story !

If that would have happened to me, I would have had great difficulties in reporting this event so cool as you have done. You seem to be a real gentleman.

Some time - not too long - ago I started to lock my car at the petrolstations, even when I only go from the pump to the cashier. My LEICA-gear very often is in the trunk of the car, that´s why I just don´t want to take any risks.

Things keep changing in our world, security turning into unsecurity is only one of them.

Truly disturbing and a sad, sad loss to you Gerard.

I know how terribly bad I would feel if I lost even the meager Leica collection I have, and it would be a very difficult time.

I pray you have insurance that will at least let you get some financial relief from this nightmare.

Thanks.

Allan

Gerard,

that's really bad news. I assume you registered the incidence with the police.

If you briefly confirm here positively I will make sure that your stolen equipment is registered in another German vendor database.

And: heads up, life goes on...imagine you would have been injured or even worse! It is "just" material which slowly can be repurchased over time...

best - Klaus

Allan, as Cynthia says any EOS-R adaptor can be used. I bought mine from Cameraquest, but there are far cheaper ones available on eBay. Personally I'm happy with the Cameraquest adaptor, but if Gérard only wants to use the camera/lens on a temporary basis he might want to get one of the cheaper ones - they cost about 20 Euros as I remember.

I am sorry to hear about your loss, but this version of theft/robbery is a well known problem in some European countries, esp. Spain, France, Italy, Hungary.

So be careful about friendly people who tell you about a problem with your car or make a little accident to make you to get out of your car (with the starter key or bags inside) or open the door while you wait in a row in front of a traffic sign to make a quick robbery.

That really sucks Gérard but thankfully it did not involve physical violence and you are safe and well - if mentally raging.

Hopefully your insurance can cover some of the cost and maybe time to look at the M8!!

I feel deeply sorry and understajnd fully your hatred.

After small car-jacking of my wife's VW, police told

me it is always useful to file a complaint.

Reason why : 6 months after a similar complaint,

they booked a thief who had about a 100 cell phones

stocked in his flat — and they were able to give it

back to those who filed the theft with the police.

Also, you may watch on eBay : after all, there are

very few DMR or 19 mm R on sale there.

Might also happen your thief could be stupid…

Last, checking with used photo equipment shops

in the city where it happened.

Might also happen some less than scrupulous

seller puts your equipment in his shop window

without "fully" checking its origin. ;-)

An insurance, yearly, costs around 370 euros for 6000 euros

total value (this is indicative only, the amount of gear covered

this way can be much more) in Europe (500 euros for the entire World)

This broker is specialized for movie and photo

equipment.

I know all this is a bit "après la bataille", but well…

Gerard, my dear friend -

My heart goes out to you. Later, after Barbara awakens, we will write in detail.

Karl above states that you must be a real gentleman. I consider that an understatement. I believe that you are the living definition of a gentleman.

Fondest regards,

Stuart

Sorry to hear of this. Anyone who buys these items, if they have even the slightest suspicion that they are stolen, is as guilty as the thieves. Thank you for your post, it serves as a warning. I hope these creeps are caught, and your equipment recovered.

Someone on the forum recently told of his camera being stolen and turning up on ebay, so it wouldn't be a bad idea to watch the site.

Dear Everyone of you.

Thank you from the deepest of my heart for all the supporting messages. I don't know what to say. I did not expect so many kind reactions. Even Leica pieces are only objects. But some objects in our lives are also a projection of our minds or an extension of our deep personality. And the theft of these is something of an amputation.

Amputations performed without anesthesia are VERY painful !

No, my outfit was not insured... A good lesson for the future equipment. Because I WILL get new equipment over hte years. I intend to save first for some lenses. Maybe when I get two or three of them, the R10 will be out?

Again, many thanks and many good feelings to everyone of you

Gérard
