kenneth Posted May 12, 2008 Share #1 Posted May 12, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Following my first post to this forum entitled hello I went into Leeds this morning and exchanged the 28/70mm zoom which I was not happy with for a 28mm Elmarit-R which came complete with a hood and UV drop in filter all Wetzlar. One query which I am sure members of the knowledgeable forum will be able to answer for me is this. The 28mm Elmarit-R lens does not have the row of bronze contacts on the back. I am assuming these contacts are only needed if one is attaching lenses to a digital R9. If that is so then no problem and I will never venture down the digital path but reassurance from members would be good

Not much of an issue, however the advantage of the ROM contacts is that some "in-camera" processing takes place with ultra wide angles etc. in order to eliminate vignetting. kenneth Posted May 12, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted May 12, 2008 Conrad I think I understand your comments- and that there is not an issue with metering on this type of lens on my R8. The captive filter/ lens hood detail is quite new to me and I guess I will need to buy a lens cap for storage- overall the lens seems in very good condition and I am looking forward to seeing results from it. I looked at you website- wonderful pictures. As a practicing Buddhist I loved the picture of His Holiness
earleygallery Posted May 13, 2008 Share #4 Posted May 13, 2008 The main function of the ROM contacts AFAIK are so that the camera/lens/flash can 'speak' to each other when you are using a Leica dedicated zoom flashgun. There will be some other functionality with a DMR back, but again, it is not essential to use ROM lenses.
kenneth Posted May 13, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted May 13, 2008 James So are you saying that the 28mm 2.8 Elmarit-R lens will function OK or not, i.e. should I keep it or return it for a refund and buy a more modern lens from another dealer

I have many 3-cam lenses for my R9 and they all work fine. There is some benefit to having ROM lenses on the R8/R9, but the older lenses are perfectly functional without ROM contacts. Tom Johnston Posted May 13, 2008 Share #7 Posted May 13, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) i really like the 28 elmarit-r and i use it regularly on my r7. as i understand it, one could use the rom lenses on older bodies, though without the benefit of the lens to camera communication. My non-ROM lenses speak to my R8s and my 40MZ-2 without the benefit of the ROM contacts.... thus I am not convinced that this is the main function of these contacts. They do however allow for some in-camera processing with the DMR as mentioned in my previous post. They are also meant to provide a gateway for future functions...
