andybarton Posted April 20, 2008 Share #1 Posted April 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) How long will it be before the majority of 35mm film sold is to Leica users? It would be interesting to see how the proportion is increasing, year on year.
Advertisement Posted April 20, 2008 Posted April 20, 2008 Hi andybarton, Take a look here Film - ONLY bought by Leica users? . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
bill Posted April 20, 2008 Share #2 Posted April 20, 2008 You raise an interesting point, Andy. I HATE to raise another point to feed the "Armchair CEOs" but as time passes I can see sense in Leica, if it wished to continue to "feed" it's customer and existing "install" base, buying or going into partnership with a film manufacturer. Can you imagine "Leica-Ilford" or "Kodica"...? Regards, Bill
andybarton Posted April 20, 2008 Author Share #3 Posted April 20, 2008 If they continue to want to sell film cameras new (debateable...), then it might have to come to that. But, they'd better start manufacturing the chemicals to process them, and the machinery, too... It goes on and on.
chris_livsey Posted April 20, 2008 Share #4 Posted April 20, 2008 Kodak might have brought out a new BW film but haven't they stopped making paper ?

At least 6 or 7 friends of mine, male & female, still continue with their SLR and/or compact zoom 35mm... don't like digital... and I switched from M4 to M8... ... indeed, they aren't "rolls eaters"... would be an interesting stat... but impossible to track, I fear

andybarton Posted April 20, 2008 Author Share #7 Posted April 20, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) This is a curious idea, but is there any evidence that this proportion is increasing yearly? None whatsoever. Just a thought I had yesterday. Leica film users are likely to be the last film users, due to their investment in glass and bodies. As the OM2 users and FM2 users and AE-1 users die or go digital, M4 and R6 users could well be going strong. So, in the same way that, eventually, "all" car drivers will be driving Rolls-Royces, so "all" film users will be Leica users.
earleygallery Posted April 20, 2008 Share #8 Posted April 20, 2008 I would suspect its the same proportion approximately of Leica users compared to other makes. There are plenty of photographers out there using their 35mm film cameras of ALL makes!

Suspect Leica users are still a tiny, tiny minority of film users and declining as fast as any other group. Rolo
hamey Posted April 20, 2008 Share #11 Posted April 20, 2008 Well I have noticed a lot of people still using all types of Film cameras especially adults. Having and using a Canon Digicam (G9) along side my Leica Film (real cam) has not converted me to Digital, matter of fact it's the opposite, I really appreciate stooting Transparansies (slides) more and more. I pity those photographers who really have nothing of substance in their digital images and are spending magabucks for their electronic equipmant Only to capture a electronic images, then to convert them to photos (paper prints) which are not a substitute to a beautiful image on a slide. Though what I like about digital, how it records the time and date etc, saves me carrying a note pad around. Remember there is NO SUBSTITUTE FOR THE REAL THING, like when I switch off this computer, I simply have nothing, Unlike my transparancies I can hold and view them at anytime. Thank goodness for Leica and Film. Cheers. Time to shut down this machine, Bye...........................

spylaw4 Posted April 21, 2008 Share #13 Posted April 21, 2008 I have noticed on my travels that in quite a few countries film is still very widely used especially where the import duties on foreign made "luxury" goods are high.

ndjambrose Posted April 21, 2008 Share #15 Posted April 21, 2008 Probably never. Unfortunately there aren't enough Leica users to keep manufacturers in business. But don't worry - I suspect there are more Lomo than Leica owners, and they'll all need film too :-)
earleygallery Posted April 21, 2008 Share #16 Posted April 21, 2008 The problem is people are so caught up in the digital hype they really do beleive that you can't buy/use film anymore. When people see my TLRs or Bronica they usually say "and you can still get the films for that??!!" Digital isn't compulsory, remember you have a choice! jacksparrow Posted April 21, 2008 Share #17 Posted April 21, 2008 There are many other film users out there, and in some circles film is the cool thing, just take a look at this: .Lomography 3.0~ / _ they are widely extended, I've seen shops in Barcelona or Madrid, for example, and they always seem to have customers interested in their stuff. hamey Posted April 21, 2008 Share #19 Posted April 21, 2008 Don't turn the lights off No down here we don't turn the lights off, we actually switch them off. As we don't need to screw and un-screw the light bulb from it's socket to TURN THE LIGHT OFF...LOL. Cheers.
andybarton Posted April 21, 2008 Author Share #20 Posted April 21, 2008 We turn the lights on and off in our house. We also turn on the TV and turn it over to change the channel - this harks back to the 60s when our TV had two bakelite rotating knobs, one to turn it on, and one to change the channel
