andybarton Posted March 31, 2008 Share #24 Posted March 31, 2008 According to Andreas Kaufman: That was one of the most unconvincing reassurances I think I have ever read. I remain unconvinced about the R10, I have to say.
jaapv Posted March 31, 2008 Share #25 Posted March 31, 2008 Well, if Sony's new 1DsIII killer is going to be the competition, there is certainly a niche for the R10. It will be easier to play a church organ...Provenance of this pic: see the watermark. Welcome, dear visitor! R10dreamer Posted April 1, 2008 Author Share #26 Posted April 1, 2008 If the answer is NO then is is logical to assume that Leica will go out of business? They can't survive (in my opinion) with only an RF camera.

Most cameras today need to have this many controls if you want to get the most out of them. Any Leica R10 will have to do the same if you want maximum functionality. The biggest advertiser in many of the shooting magazines left by the hard nuts in the back country huts for anything optical other than gunsights, was not Zeiss, nor Nikon nor Leupold, but our venerable favourite brandishing its hallmark cliche "For that Decisive moment" Probably a bigger market than the blinkers on photographic market appreciates, those boys spend a buck to make a buck ... or doe. rgfenn Posted April 1, 2008 Share #29 Posted April 1, 2008 It is sad that Leica still feels that keeping there customes in the dark is somehow going to increase business and hold off the competition. I personally know of three friends who have sold all their Leica equipment, because they were tired of waiting and the real fact that the competition has some excellent products currently available now. I recently spoke to some of the peopel at Leica in New Jersey and the offical work is they do not know if an R10 is coming. You woud think Leica would like to conserve ,if not expand its current user base for the R system. No press release, no time line, no pre-production samples. SHAME on Leica. It is too bad, aa more and more people are abandoning Leica for Canon and Nikon everyday. It is an absolute shame as Leica offers excellent products. If I only had the money I would buy up the controlling interest in Leica AG and personally fire everyone one on the board and bring Leica into the 21st century with an up to date business model. They probably thought they were doing that when they brought Steven K Lee on board. The day we have to worry about is when Andreas Kaufmann wakes up and asks himself, "Do I really want this?" You can substitute the word Leica by Nikon prior to the D3 announcement, right? If I recall correctly there was no roadmap, no leaks and most of its users were switching to Canon or bitching about how the company was pretty much finished... look at them now. By no means I am comparing Leica to Nikon, Canon or Sony, but my point is that we've heard this story so many time from the masses of armchair CEOs that frequent many of the internet forums. Cheers, Riccis

Riley Posted April 1, 2008 Share #35 Posted April 1, 2008 If the answer is NO then is is logical to assume that Leica will go out of business? They can't survive (in my opinion) with only an RF camera. my vote is YES, but i dont think that observation shares any logic at all it will be far more difficult to be competitive in the dSLR market than the current dominant 100% share of the RF market. If a FF version of M8 is representative of where R10 would be going it would have the toughest of times competing with pretty well all dSLRs. RF may lack sophistication and in a sense they are loved for their simplicity. Not so the dSLR which needs a truckload of technology to compete My feeling all along has suggested that even a fixed lens compact Leica equipped with APSC or 4/3rds sensor would outsell the R series 3 to one. marknorton Posted April 1, 2008 Share #36 Posted April 1, 2008 Plus of course the M has always out-sold the R by a substantial margin. To re-establish the R when even the film body is out of production is going to take some doing. They're starting a long way back. It may not have to compete feature for feature with Canon and Nikon but it's got to offer image quality which will establish a clear niche for it. Tall order, I would say. rosuna Posted April 1, 2008 Share #37 Posted April 1, 2008 The Sony A-900 isn't designed to be a 1Ds Mark III killer, but a 5D Mark II killer. The competitive pressure was high firstly in the low end reflex segment, then in the medium priced reflex cameras segment and now is reaching the pro-bodies. I think Leica had an opportunity for offering a competitive full frame R reflex camera in 2004. Then, only Canon was playing in that field. At this moment all is far more difficult. The new Sony (25 MP, sensor stabilization, live view based on a second sensor... agressive price) points to how high the pressure level will be in 2009. And we don't know yet the counterattack of Canon and Nikon, and maybe even Pentax. As Mark Norton says, Leica cannot match all the features of Canon/Nikon/Sony top bodies, but they must be ahead in some key areas, specially those related to image quality. This is, more or less, the medium format niche. All this helps to understand those "bigger than" 35mm format comments by Dr. Kaufmann.
Fokus Posted April 1, 2008 Share #38 Posted April 1, 2008 I agree with Martin:D (Yes,No?!) But seriously: there is a cerain chance an R 10 is going to come at Photokina. __________ Ralf
jaapv Posted April 1, 2008 Share #39 Posted April 1, 2008 The Sony A-900 isn't designed to be a 1Ds Mark III killer, but a 5D Mark II killer. Whatever it is designed to be the killer of, is not that relevant. The point is that Leica will not be, nor ever was, able to compete in this market. That would be suicide. There is only one option for them - cling to their traditional business model of simple, but very good cameras which appeal to the photographer who wants full manual control and as little automation as possible. They can build superior optics; the bodies are only vehicles to mount them on - it must be a difficult juggling act in the digital age.
sdai Posted April 1, 2008 Share #40 Posted April 1, 2008 This is, more or less, the medium format niche. All this helps to understand those "bigger than" 35mm format comments by Dr. Kaufmann. Well, if Leica think that they could have better chance to take a bite from Hasselblad, Phase One, Leaf instead of competing against Canon, Nikon ... I think they're wrong. Who will write the firmware and post processing software for them? I'm not holding my breath.
