Right now BHphotovideo has the L1 at $1499.95...

Wow, the B&H price went up a couple hundred dollars! The lowest price on amazon usa is up also to $1118. Well, it is a pretty special camera (as is the Digilux 3). As the available numbers dwindle supply and demand, as well as a weak dollar, is kickng in.

It's the same camera as an E-330 (and the E-330 has better LV modes). You can get an that camera on EBay new, now, for... About $300 with lens.

All due respect........taint the same as the 330.

Of course it is. It uses the same basic chassis with different panels on the outside, same mirror box, same main sensor. The ONLY difference is some variation on firmware. If you take a RAW file, and use the same lens, you are going to end up with pretty much the same result.

You can spin it all you want, but an E-330, DMC-L1 and Diglilux 3 are the same camera, just as an F-Body Firebird and a Camaro are the same cars, or a Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky are the same cars.

I have to agree. A friend of mine has the E310 which I borrowed for a weekend to see if I might like it. I have also handled the Digilux 3 while weighing options to replace my Digilux 2. I have read that the innards are the same, but to me personally the cameras themselves -- in terms of feel and ergonomics -- are worlds apart. The E310 -- and E410 which I also tried -- are no contest to the Digilux 3 in terms of sheer joy of handling.

I liked the Digilux 3 for the same reason I love my Digilux 2, but boy is it big, heavy and loud! (Plus, I don't like SLRs, so...) The E310 navigation system also seems unnecessarily complex to me. The difference is like using a Nokia and then trying to use a Motorola -- the device just gets in the way too much.

......<SNIP>......What do Panasonic have? Two, maybe three lenses.

Mark, Your last sentence captures the essence of the technology in traditional photography. We knew for many years, "The lens was all that mattered".

But now the digital era seems to be changing the photography paradigm.

After 30+ years of Olympus OM (OM1,2 and 4) shooting, I now like the Leica glass much more than the Zuiko that I have been accustomed with.

After 15 months of D3/L1 shooting, I've now well and truly come to the conclusion that I dislike the "in-camera generated jpegs of the L1", the AWB is not accurate, and the images lack sharpness. Fortunately those generated by SilkyPix from the L1's RAW files are absolutely superb after WB and sharpness correction.

So now I conclude that we can no longer just compare camera body and lens between vendors, but have to take into account the digital work-flow as well, to see the eventual photographic evidence for the comparison of any type between models/vendors.

The firmware is different.

The RAW files are rendered differently.

The camera handles differently.

The JPEG files are different.

The controls, levers and buttons are different.

There is an aperture ring on the Panasonic and Leica lenses.

The warranty is different.

The flash is different.

Not all is the same as you would prefer.

The firmware is different.

It’s not just a matter of firmware; the image processing is using a different processor (Venus Engine III). Also, I’ve found the viewfinder to be better than that of the E-330 – Panasonic dropped the secondary sensor so they could use all of what little light they got for the optical viewfinder. Of course, the E-3’s viewfinder is way superior, but that’s not a Porro mirror design.

I agree.

It's a different experience using the Digilux that the 330.

I own all three cameras as well as others and for everyday use around the job I use the 330 as the regular banger. I wouldn't feel as bad if it got damaged as I would the other two.

  • 2 months later...

I got a bargain on a mint L1 kit plus extras on eBay for the measly price of $850.00. Back in January, they sold them on Amazon for $799.00 for the L1 kit. The price has dropped since the camera was discontinued. Ironically, Panasonic would have sold L1s faster had they competitively priced them as a consumer DSLR instead of selling them as a premium market camera for 2K.
