Which Version of 135mm Tele-Elmar to Get?

David,

I have mine coded as a 135 elmarit 2.8. I don't think you need to code apart from the convenience of it showing up on the EXIF's. What I have not been able to achieve as yet is to code in a different position so that the coding shows up when the lens is over-rotated to bring up the 90mm frame-lines.

Wilson, let me say that i've never had a Tele-Elmar 135 live in my hands. Can you please tell me what is that strange object inside the mount flange? Maybe this is a silly question, but I've never seen anything like that in my lenses.

Yes- the push-pull, you can see the helecoid "Schleife"deeper inside.

I understand, if you are very brave, you can undo the locking screws on the rectangular plate which retains this brass tab and adjust back focus yourself - shudder!

I recently bought a circa 1961 135/f4 Elmar on the bay & was really pleasantly surprised when it focused perfectly as soon as it was mounted on my 2007 M8. Love the low contrast, long throw nature of this lens. Here are a couple of pics taken with this lens from a recent wedding I covered. I don't think you will be disappointed with buying one of these babies, regardless of when it was made.

Cheers

Evad, fantastic pictures which show just what is possible. The first one possibly is pushing the lens to the limits (a shade too close to the bride), but all are lovely pictures emphasizing how useful the 135mm lens it.

I TRIED to do like that on my Tele Elmarit 135... brave but unskilled :(... is a very risky operation difficult to come back from... the result was : BEFORE my TE 2,8 was slightly OOF, AFTER worst again... :(. Someday I'll make it adjusted... but is a lens I don't love too much...

And it's so a fine lens to use on Viso for Macro, that to me it's a pity not to have the "old" version.

I was wondering if someone might explain what this means? I suppose there is some way to use part of the lense (with some other piece) in order to shoot macro? Many thanks!

Novice - yes on the earlier 135 TE lenses, the one's without built-in lens shades, the front portion (ahead of the focus ring but including the aperture ring) can be unscrewed from the back portion, and then screwed into a shorter focus mount that fits on the Visoflex and still focuses to infinity.

Left as a whole unit, any 135 can be mounted on a Viso for macro use only.

The pusher used in the earlier 135 TEs was to save weight and metal - rather than having a solid 3"-deep focus cam that reached all the way back to the lens mount, the cam ends about 2.5 inches inside the lens, and the pusher transmits the cam movement to the camera.

Here's a link that shows both the last and the earlier cosmetic versions of the 135 TE f/4: http://www.summilux.net/documents/ElmarM135-300ppp.pdf

Personally, I've just stuck with the mid-to-early versions, because 1) it is a heavy lens, and the last version with built-in shade was even heavier than the early version (both outweigh a 90 'cron), and 2) since it is in some ways a marginal lens for RF use, I'm just as happy staying with the lower-priced versions. Plus the clip-on-shade version will share 39mm lens caps with my 35 'lux and 90 TE.

I had DAG add a bit of metal to the cam so it brings up the correct framelines and mill the 6 bit codes... It was a couple hundred bucks but works perfectly with no tricks and he adjusted the focus so its spot on

Here is an excellent resource to see the different lens models:

Novice,

You can use it in various ways on a Viso. If you don't unscrew the rear (long) focusing tube, it works on a Viso as a Macro, focusing from about 25 to 35 cm. Then you can use various adapters, mounts and extension tubes to achieve everything from infinity focus to other lengths of macro - see diagrams below. Ignore the black extension tube 16472K in the top diagram as I think it is for a Hector not a T-E. Finally here is a pic of the T-E in its most "normal" arrangement on a Viso with the 16464K focusing mount.
