kwpatlaw Posted March 6, 2008 Share #1 Posted March 6, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello There! I Own A 50 Cron Which I Love, But I Need ( Want) More Speed. My Question Is How Do The Pre-asph And Asph Versions Of This Lens Differ In The Way They Draw? There Is An Obvious Price Difference Therefore I Assume They Draw Differently. I Look Forward To Your Thoughts.

RITskellar Posted March 6, 2008 Share #3 Posted March 6, 2008 Yes, Very Different In Cost And In Rendering. Sorry, Drawing. Though I Don't Have The ASPH Version, I Do Own The Pre-Asph (With Built-In Hood). Pre-Asph Is Softer. The New Asph Is Sharper And Slightly More Contrasty Than The Pre. I Prefer The Older One, As The New One Is A Bit Too Clinical For My Taste. You Should Search RFF And Here, As This Topic Has Been Discussed Ad Nauseam. Cheers, Andy
kwpatlaw Posted March 6, 2008 Author Share #4 Posted March 6, 2008 How is this Chilihead? Hope all is well up north! Andy, thanks alot for your input. I am looking for a softer rendering and as you say less " clinical". Take care guys!!
peter_n Posted March 6, 2008 Share #5 Posted March 6, 2008 I currently use both. I don't think the ASPH is harsh, but it is sharper than the pre. If you want to see how these lenses look check on the respective tags on flickr. The one thing I don't like about the pre is the OOF area at f1.4. It looks ugly to me - double lines and weirdness. See the pic below, I posted it here a couple weeks ago but it shows the effect. Welcome, dear visitor! kwpatlaw Posted March 6, 2008 Author Share #8 Posted March 6, 2008 Gentlemen, thanks for your input. It is really helpful.I especially found LCTs posting to be extremely helpful. It is wonderful to have so many knowledgeable people on this forum to discuss various issues with. Now the difficulty is which lens do i buy!! I already have a 50 cron, 75 lux, and 35 cron asph.....hmmmmmm.......
lct Posted March 6, 2008 Share #9 Posted March 6, 2008 ...I am looking for a softer rendering and as you say less "clinical"... If you shoot a lot at f/1.4, the asph is a bit harsh but not really 'clinical' and it is probably the sharpest 50 i've used in 30 years at that aperture. But at slower apertures, the pre-asph (i mean the latest one, code number 11868) is plenty sharp and smooth in the same time and is almost perfect IMHO but it in a matter of tastes of course. You posted in the film forum, so I think you aren't referring to usage on M8... well my impression is that maybe you don't need a Lux 50... if your lens set is the above, why not going a little further ? A 135 is really enjoyable on a film Leica... or a 21 if you don't mind to use an add-on VF...
Guest s.m.e.p. Posted March 6, 2008 Share #11 Posted March 6, 2008 I use the Summilux-M 50/1.4 (non-asph. last version) since 2001. It´s very sharp and has a nice bokeh. I like it very much for portraits. Here are some examples, sorry I don´t remember which aperture I used. lct Posted March 7, 2008 Share #17 Posted March 7, 2008 Yes you win, first asph, second pre-asph. How lucky we are to use lenses like that aren't we.
tobey bilek Posted March 9, 2008 Share #18 Posted March 9, 2008 The only reason to get 1.4 is to use 1.4 and the pre-asph `lux is soft there and by 2.0 to 5.6 the Summicron is still better. Plus it has a bunch of distortion compared to a `Cron which keeps straight lines straight. Summary- if you want soft 1.4, get the old. If you want sharp get the new. If you use 2.0 to 11, use your Summicron. I have used some nice 1959 `Luxes, never did find a decent pre-asph one. My opinion anyway. Less critical people will disagree. The lens only sold because that was all there was at 1.4. Same opinion of the 35 Lux except ot is worse.

I agree that the asph is sharper at f/1.4 of course but i have not seen distorsions so far, the latest pre-asph is not soft at f/1.4 (pics) and it is sharper at f/2 than the Summicron at same aperture, at least the one with focus tab (# 11819) i use personally.
