fotografr Posted February 27, 2008 Share #1 Posted February 27, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) Had a theater (opera) shoot last night and this scene was so dark I couldn't shoot it with my Canons without jacking the ISO up really high. Fortunately, I also had the M8 and Noctilux with me. This was shot at f/1.0, ISO 320.

Rona!d Posted February 27, 2008 Share #2 Posted February 27, 2008 So you had only f/8.0 lenses with your Canon? 1.0 at 320 ASA? With a nice 1.4 lens on your Canon you don´t need to jack up ISO really high;) Had a theater (opera) shoot last night and this scene was so dark I couldn't shoot it with my Canons without jacking the ISO up really high. When I shoot theater I always need zooms rather than primes because the action moves so quickly around the stage area, and my zooms are all f/2.8. The bag is heavy enough carrying that stuff, so I don't bring other lenses like my 50/1.2. I just happened to be carrying my M8 and Nocti last night because I was coming from another shoot where I was using it and didn't want to leave it in the car. Rona!d Posted February 27, 2008 Share #4 Posted February 27, 2008 Brent, it always sounds good, that you couldn´t do a shot with a Canon or Nikon and the M8 is the choice of the evening
fotografr Posted February 27, 2008 Author Share #5 Posted February 27, 2008 Brent, it always sounds good, that you couldn´t do a shot with a Canon or Nikon and the M8 is the choice of the evening It wasn't meant as a Canon-bash. I make the bulk of my income with Canons. I shot 300 images last night at this production and all but 35 of them were with my Canons. Fsor this particular shot, the M8 was the better choice--that's all. Maybe I should have started the thread by saying, "This M8 is really a piece of shit, particularly with the Nocti attached, but last night I got really luck and made a halfway decent shot." Would that have worked?

Fokus Posted March 17, 2008 Share #12 Posted March 17, 2008 Had a theater (opera) shoot last night and this scene was so dark I couldn't shoot it with my Canons without jacking the ISO up really high. Fortunately, I also had the M8 and Noctilux with me. This was shot at f/1.0, ISO 320. Very nice, a demonstration of f1,0.
calvinboy24 Posted March 17, 2008 Share #13 Posted March 17, 2008 Wow, f/1.0 using ISO 320? If my math if right that would mean using your Canon at f2.8 with the same shutter speed you'd have to shoot at ISO 3200! The photo is perfectly exposed and sharp as a tack. No issues with shutter noise at a show like this? Seems you were pretty close up. An SLR mirror slap seems like it would be more distracting to the performers. Great photo. Lots of emotions in the faces of the performers.
Belle Posted March 19, 2008 Share #14 Posted March 19, 2008 I like the way the subject pops. Great composition and focus. Well done! p.s. Did you use a 1.25x viewfinder magnifier?

If my math if right that would mean using your Canon at f2.8 with the same shutter speed you'd have to shoot at ISO 3200! Pretty close--somewhere between ISO 2500 and 3200, which is why I didn't want to use the Canon for the shot.
