According to a Dutch photo shop (Minderman aanbiedingen) they expect that the M8 will be available around the 23rd of November. This will be at the same time they are offering their customers to have a look at this camera in their store. FYI, they are taking early registrations for the M8 which they believe to sell at Euro 3195(ex vat).

Etienne

My supplier always told me it would be mid November.

It reminds me of just about any service industry when it come s to delivery. "Do you want it <<as is>> or will you wait till we finish it?

Some of the best things in life take a little longer.;)

My dealer in the U.S. told me last week he had been in direct contact with Leica; the camera would be available by the first week of October; and that the price he would be able to offer it at is $4750. He was very firm about all of this. I think the news out of Holland is incorrect. JB

Don't say the Dutch info is incorrect too fast;

€ 3.195 + 607,05 (19% VAT) = € 3.802,05...

Just got off the phone, they say unfortunately delivery ( to them? ) has been postponed.

Patience my friends. It's hard, I know...

Well, I've heard that the majority of the first shipments go to the US - but that's just rumor, also. (Leica US sells more product than all of Europe (outside of Germany) combined).

It may also have to do with the volume of pre-orders. IF there are 1000 preordered in the US, and 50 in the Netherlands (totally random guesses), and the US pre-orders are longer-standing (I placed mine in January) then they may get filled first.

Although I've also heard rumblings of a little 'slippage' in US deliveries as well - November 1 plus or minus a week rather than right after Photokina.

The silver lining if this cloud is true - more time to fill the piggy-bank!

We should also remember that Leica is not committed to meeting OUR speculative deadlines. All they have committed to publicly is "Last quarter of 2006". So they aren't "late" until Dec. 31.

As to the US price - my dealer has now signed the Leica NDA, so all he would say is that he was sure I'd be "happy" with the price. Anywhere between $4,495 and $4,995 (pre-tax) has been my expectation, so I don't even bother speculating on the exact 100.

I strongly agree with Andy. Leica has not publically announced an availability date for a new digital rangefinder and they certainly shouldn't be held responsible for meeting rumored availability dates. I'd pay the most attention to availability dates they formally announce for new products.

Cheers,

Sean

Not being in the order que, I don't have a dog in this fight.

If for no other reason than cash flow, I'm sure they'd like to answer all demand on the first day of announcement, but we all know that can't happen. They're not a big outfit, and doubt they ever will be.

And do they want to ship a product that will be viewed as a lemon? No way.

So they'll do the smart thing. Announce and display at Photokina (as they have historically done for decades with all their major products), then ship when they feel its ready for the consumers. It would be foolish to do otherwise.

Just keep humming a few bars of Carly Simons 'Anticipation'.

Euro 3195 ... this gave me a little moment short of breath!

If it would have been _including_ VAT I have the strong fealing that I would have rushed to the phone!

But reading the rest of this thread brought me back to earth ...

... and all these "excluing VAT" offers here in the Netherlands continue to annoy me to the most! [when will they start having prices like in the airline biz: excluding taxes and surcharges (handling charge, delivery charge (to the shop - like in car biz), fuel surcharge for delivery, package (the silver box), etc.? ... [/cynism].

Being very happy with the optical quality of my Digilux 2 I think I would have jumped on the Leica Bandwagon for this price (3,2 K incl.) plus a nice lens ... but ... ... ... hmm ... all these breathtaking 'toys for boys' ... :)

But at least it's good to know that there'll be another shop around here where one might be able to acutally touch the beast of desire! :)

BTW, another link, see at the end of the page. Sorry if it has already been posted here.

Leica M8 at Photokina… Come On Already! « My Fascinating Opinions

There you can read (further down):

"There is a alrge screen at the back and of course you cannot aim through it, just the classical viewfinder/rangefinder is usable."

Hmm ... that's bad news, IMHO!

"The lever is the most significant part missing, and your right thumb might get disoriented"

Epson chose to keep the advance lever to cock the shutter, Leica have chosen to use a motor. Perhaps someone like Cameraquest will make an add on 'dummy' lever to rest ones thumb against? I thought Leica would include a lever but give it a different purpose, I was thinking it would be a digital zoom function, i.e. as you 'advance' the lever the digi zoom factor increases.

Or to hold the camera better like we do with the M3 DS and the R-D1.

This point will probably be discussed at length after the 15th September but according to Jorge's pictures, the M8 body looks quite slippery at first glance. Reason why there is a bump on its eveready case i guess.
