Any R10 beta testers out there?

At about this time or even earlier, before the M8 was officially launched, there were a number of select beta testers under very stringent confidentiality agreements.

I am wondering if there are any R10 testers around already or perhaps Leica caught a cold from the M8 IR debacle and decided that beta testing is a waste of time and money? Or perhaps the prototype M8 testers DID report their IR findings and the info was not heeded by the Leica boffins?

Just curious!

Don't all of us feel like beta testers most f the time?

Seriously, is the R10 already in its beta stage? that's pretty darn quick.

I doubt it. But Leica is pretty tight-lipped about new developments these days; nobody really knows (and anyone who knows wouldn’t tell).

I was a beta tester for the M8. My week-long test with the M8 and newly minted 6-bit coded lenses wasn't until August, just a little over a month before Photokina. At that time there were two M8s in the entire US, one black and one silver. I had the black. FW v0.2.

For the record (again), I didn't notice any IR problems for two reasons:

  1. I wasn't looking for it and,
  2. I live in South Florida. Who the heck wears black synthetic fabrics in Florida in August?! It is like 90 degrees in the shade with 100% humidity. For us it's all about cotton and light colors.

I do hope to beta test the R10 as I'm acutally more of an R shooter anyway. No, I don't have one now, and I doubt anyone will have one for quite some time.

I for one, am eagerly awaiting what Leica comes out with for the R system.

I think the R10 will be well on its way by now. Take a look at these two shots showing the M8 board revision levels which made it into the first production cameras. The sensor board is dated Revision 1, February 06, 7 months before announcement and the DSP board is dated Revision 4, May 06, 4 months before announcement. That's not to say earlier versions of the boards didn't work.

I fully expect there are working versions of the R10 out there and the focus will be on refining the design and built, optimising the supply chain and a big push on firmware development.

should these circumstances be connected then...

we already know the spec of the R10

Unfortunately, I'm not at liberty to discuss. :(

Ah well you see some of the better known M8 prototype testers did notify us and tempt and tease us with "you won't be disappointed" type comments but otherwise would/could not be drawn into giving anything away about technical specifications etc. as you would expect. But so far....total silence!

That's because R users tend to be a more discreet bunch... :D

"Discerning" is another word, I'd use :)

I don't want someone who only knows half a story telling me that "I won't be disappointed" - especially if I would have been disappointed by IR problems, green blobs and all the rest.

I want Leica to get the R10 right, test it properly, thoroughly, in all the wierdest lighting conditions imaginable and then some. I want them to test it in the Sahara and in Lapland, just like car manufacturers do. I want them to test the shutter to destruction, I want them to burn out the battery. I'm sure you get the point.

I don't want them to put anything to the public at Photokina if they haven't done all this. I'd rather wait for the next show, than them rush something out that isn't ready - lets face it, they're not exactly losing R sales right now because people are delaying their purchases - there are NO R sales right now anyway.

I've got a strange feeling that this damn thing won't be called R10.

Think about it ... if it's going to sport a larger than 24x36mm sensor, use a pellicle mirror, can only use "legacy" R lenses with an adapter in crop mode ... then it deserves a new name. It should be called B1 ... a stealth bomber, BIG ONE. :p
