Yes it was Ivor, I didn't know his name, but the large fellow with curly hair formerly of the Classic Camera is him. (I bet he has some stories to tell). And I wish I could say exactly where I was at the time, I was meandering up and down the side streets and not really paying attention. I guess I was about 10 minutes walking from Old Street Tube station towards C. London. Facing Central London the shop was on the left side of the road. Their URL (reddotcamera.co.uk) was plastered on the window but at the moment its only a holding page on GoDaddy's servers.

Ho hum - this morning's exercise will be up and down Old Street then! ;)

Report to be filed later!

While it's true that there are only two 'premier' dealers in central London, according to the Leica web site, there are four more 'authorised' dealers -- Calumet (Euston), Kingsley (Tottenham Ct Rd), Jacobs (New Oxf St), and Harrods (!). Calumet has recently become a Leica dealer (according to recent Calumet ads). So perhaps it is not all decline.

Later .... located! It's about 5-10 mins from Old Street tube station - take the exit towards St Luke's Centre and it is just beyond St L on the opposite side of the road. Buses would be 55 (from outside Jacobs, New Oxford St.) or 243 from Waterloo via Holborn (Central Street stop is nearest).

Nice small modern shop at the bottom of a recently completed infill block. Very pleasant welcome. Quite good stock - all 2nd hand at the moment (tempting!) - LTM, M and some R cameras, lenses and accessories - but the new stuff arrived from Leica as I was there so by later today or the weekend it should be all systems go.

Ivor reckons that the website will be up in about 2 weeks - lot of shots of the gear have to be taken first.

Phone 020 7490 8444 - sales@reddotcameras.co.uk - no harm in a small plug is there! (Usual disclaimers)

OK so is it definitive that TCC is no longer an official Leica dealer (let alone a premier one)? I looked on their web site to look at new R lenses, and only four were there, as if they were selling existing new stock only - at very high full list prices that no-one else seems to charge!

Well let's just hope Ivor isn't going to apply the same levels of TCC 'customer service' at his new venture.

I wonder if the s/h stock is 'new' or stuff from TCC?

Didn't seem to be when I was in - just him and his wife (and an visiting IT guy sorting something out). No idea of the 2nd hand source, but I think he left TCC some months ago.

If you go to the Leica Dealer Locator and type in info for central London The Classic Camera doesn't show up in the results though Caplan, Lewis, Harrods, Calumet etc do. Circumstantial evidence but if they were, you'd think they'd be on this list.

I'm new to Leicas - bought an M8 from RG Lewis in November.

Since then I have bought a couple of great new lenses from TCC - A voigtlander Color Skopar 21/4 and a Zeiss T Sonnar 50/1.5. So I can confoirm that they now stock Zeiss and Voigtlander lenses - and Nikon too.

Its a lovely shop - much better service than RG Lewis, who I am annoyed with because they made a big deal about prices going up. Apparently lat November was my last chance to get a M8 at the "old price". lol.

I'd be really disappointed if TCC were being pushed out into the cold by Leica.

Add to this the closing down of Wey Cameras last year (no replacement dealership announced). Is this a trend?

Jeff

The closing down of Wey Cameras (my nearest Premier dealership) had nothing to do with Leica. The owner was retiring and nobody wanted to take the business on.

Leica introduced the Premier dealer model a couple of years ago. It put a number of midrange dealers noses out of joint, because they were told that there were only a limited number of Premier slots, and that the Premier dealers would get first call on new stock, etc. Some dropped out then - RAP in Camberley, for instance, because they thought that the Premier dealers would mop up all the new business.

Regards,

Bill

More likely, somebody at Classic Camera woke up and realised that there is a whole photographic market outside of Leica that they can profitably sell to. I don't blame them.

...though I imagine they'd be largely of the selling-people-cameras variety? ;)

I am not going to name any sources, but it was Leica who dumped The Classic Camera, not just because of the owners strange attitude to customers but other issues that Leica did not find amusing. I alluded to this happening in a thread a few weeks ago, but it got lost in the upgrade hypertension.

It will be interesting to see how he fairs, without a premium exclusive brand. Secondhand Leicas are hardly a money spinner and anybody wanting a Nikon would do much better at Jacobs or Jessops.

Good luck to Ivan, he was the only person in TCC who chewed the fat with you.

[snip]

Prices going up do reduce sales especially if the dealer doesn't have a large amount of stock on hand to sell at the old price. Although RG Lewis may not have the stock of Classic Camera they are very good at obtaining items quickly. They managed to locate a WATE finder and one of the last Tri-Elmars when others couldn't supply.
