Camera Obscura Posted February 12, 2008 Share #1 Â Posted February 12, 2008 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have been looking at getting a second hand 50 mm lens for my R4 / R8 and have got rather confused with the ROM and 1, 2 or 3 Cams. What does this mean and what do I need to pay attention to. Â All my other lenses are about 15-20 years old. I am told that some of the automatic functions (I think P and T) on the camera will not work if I do not have a ROM or 3 cam lens?? Anyone got any insights. Â Originally I was trying to compare image quality of the 50mm 1.4 to the f2 version and got a little diverted. Any thoughts on which lense is actually the best 50mm lens for R series? Â Thanks as always guys.... Â John

robsteve Posted February 12, 2008 Share #3 Â Posted February 12, 2008 John: Â You need 3-cam, 3rd cam only, or ROM lenses for the R8. Without the 3rd cam, you would have to use stop down metering on the R3 to R9 cameras. Â Stop down metering prevents the use of all auto mode. wildlightphoto Posted February 12, 2008 Share #4 Â Posted February 12, 2008 Any thoughts on which lense is actually the best 50mm lens for R series? Â The E60 'lux is the sharpest there is, OTOH I'm very partial to the overall 'look' the E55 'lux provides. The 60 Macro is a bit longer but it provides outstanding image quality over a wide range of distances and apertures and the 'cron's image quality is only a bit behind the E60 'lux and it's small and lightweight, so there's really no single "right" answer to this question. SoFi-Chaser Posted February 12, 2008 Share #5 Â Posted February 12, 2008 [...]Any thoughts on which lense is actually the best 50mm lens for R series?[...] In my experience: the 50 Cron, actual design (with or without ROM, doesn't matter for image quality) Compared to the lux, there's only one disadvantage: It has no f/1,4 The 60 macro can also be used very well as a standard lens (so did I until I needed another R6-Body which was attached to a 50Cron, now I love this new f-stop more). The 50 Lux is a good lens, but still not perfect in the corners of the slide (at maximum aperture with tripod and mirror-lock). But if you need f1,4, go for it! Otherwise, take the Cron. Of all three lenses, it's the cheapest and definitely not the "worst". Regards T.
