Excellent responses, thank you all. I haven't totted up yet, but we are well on the way to 100 participants - a tremendous response.

Just to clarify a couple of points:

  • You can take your photo at any time on "your" February 29th
  • You can take it anywhere, of any subject; it is your vision
  • A dedicated sub-forum or gallery (TBA) will be set up for the purpose; Admin and I will work on this
  • You DO NOT have to post your picture on the day; those of us using film would struggle to do so! There will be a "window" for posting

Keep 'em coming!

Regards,

Bill

A breath of fresh air, yes my wife and I are up for this. I have pretty well given up reading the forums because of all the carping and backbiting about Leica - I think they do a great job. It is so nice to see lots of us want to actually take pictures with our cameras!

........overlooking the phrases 'hardened pro' AND 'gentleman amateur', bill, i think it's a great idea and, fortunately, i will be in new zealand, with my camera and lots of film........... looking forward to it

laura

Laura, you are most welcome, and to you, and the other ladies who have signed up, I extend a sincere apology for my sexist language in my original post. In my defence I would point out that most if not all of those who have been arguing here lately are men*

Regards,

Bill

*No, that excuse didn't work "at home" either...

Hi,

I think this is a great idea !

If this hasn't been answered yet, I see that Flickr.com gives the possibility of "place this photo on a map" for each uploaded photo. The uploader then just drags the map around to the location of the shot. So, photo collection and geographic location all in one !

Open question for debate then: Should the photo marker be placed:

1) where I was standing (where the camera was) when I tool the photo ?, or

2) where the subject of the photo is located ?

If 1), then other people have the opportunity to recreate the shot.... so 1) gets my vote.

Welcome Stephen,

Just to be clear, the photos will be posted here, on the Leica User Forum, not on Flickr or anywhere else. Admin is looking into ways to do the mapping here. As to your questions, I doubt very much that we will be working to a degree of accuracy (or that your subject will be that far away) that subject and photographer location are not effectively one and the same.

Regards,

Bill

Bringing people together is already the meaning (and intention) of this forum. The good thing is diversity: we don't need to have all here the same opinions, ideas or feelings.

And "charity" is a word I really don't like. I help people as much as I can, but I don't practice charity (it's vexing for the people who receive it and makes us to feel better or a better conscience)

.

Manuel,

Let's hope that you never find yourself to be a disabled photographer in need of support.

If you prefer not to contribute that's fine, nobody's demanding that you do, but please keep your views to yourself and let the rest of us get on with helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

Pete.

That makes this already the single biggest event we have ever planned or executed.

Keep signing up!

Regards,

Bill

And I don’t come here with silly ideas like “Leica Day” and charity. Why not “McDonald’s day” and everyone in this forum goes to McDonald’s to eat a Big Mac and donate £50 for “McDonald’s Foundation for Children? (There’re boxes to collect money next to the cashiers, you know?)

I'm sorry to hear about your horrific experiences, but honestly you are totally missing the point of what Bill is trying to do. It's an attempt to get us all out using those expensive cameras towards a common goal, and in the process possibly help someone. It is _anything_ _but_ a silly idea. If you don't want to participate fine, don't.

So far there has been one descenting voice, yours.
