earleygallery Posted August 31, 2006 Share #2 Posted August 31, 2006 I use Paypal for buying/selling - not had any problems with Paypal themselves but I have just had a problem with goods not arriving and trying to get my money back! Depends what you're using it for.
Guest flatfour Posted August 31, 2006 Share #3 Posted August 31, 2006 I am in the UK and have had trouble with PayPal. There was a BBC TV programme here which was set off by numerous complaints from sellers not receiving money from PayPal. PayPal said the buyers details were not but they let them use the PayPal log. - How does the seller know if the payment appears to have gone through? In any case I never but never give my bank details over the internet. - which PayPal require.
pascal_meheut Posted August 31, 2006 Share #4 Posted August 31, 2006 Yes, I'm verified. It allowed me to transfer money from paypal to my bank account easily or something like this. The process was easy, just took some time.

topoxforddoc Posted August 31, 2006 Share #6 Posted August 31, 2006 I've had no problems as a verified paypal user in the UK. I've done about 50 transactions without a hitch. Charlie

uulrich Posted August 31, 2006 Share #8 Posted August 31, 2006 I am wondering if it is a good idea to use the Verified bank account with PayPal. Any users here do this? tnx. Yes, I have a verified PP acount. I think you can get verified if you are in UK and US; not sure about it. After some time you 'collect' points due to transactions w/ other verified PP users. Thus a small network can araise w/ PP users who got verified. I am also verified eBay user. I use the EBay platform for selling and buying and I feel rather comfortable w/ it. As always, you need to be concious what you are doing and who sends you an eMail. i.e. I would not recomment to put your eMail address into the signature as tools are out there to search for addresses. Do not use that eMail address for your online auction emails I might add.
albertwang Posted August 31, 2006 Share #9 Posted August 31, 2006 Verification through Paypal is evil and should not be used. I believe that it's a good way for hackers to get access to your bank accounts. Rule of thumb: Never trust the SYSTEM. It is NEVER on your side. (Think 1984). pascal_meheut Posted August 31, 2006 Share #10 Posted August 31, 2006 Sure Albert. Did you managed to defeat the Matrix too or are you still into it? BTW, 1984 was no SciFi but a description of USSR under Staline...
albertwang Posted August 31, 2006 Share #11 Posted August 31, 2006 Dude, I don't think that the Matrix is undefeatable however. We can triumph over it for sure... In fact, the internecine connections between Paypal and the large guys is inevitable. One of my ebay buddies complains about the fees that paypal rips him off. If they can't treat the small seller with respect, how can I expect to trust them? Like doh! Seriously, if you have faith in Paypal, be my guest. Just don't be surprised when your balance is less than zero.

mat_mcdermott Posted August 31, 2006 Share #13 Posted August 31, 2006 I'm verified and have had no problems whatsoever with Paypal. Plenty of people have however. There are entire websites devoted to their woes, should you want to find out how bad it can get (if statistically unlikely).
wparsonsgisnet Posted August 31, 2006 Author Share #14 Posted August 31, 2006 The responses seem pretty well divided. I am a verteran eBay user of almost 10 years, with excellent success, and I remain enthusiastic. I also used PayPal for many years, but they don't seem to understand the my perfectly good credit card is perfectly good. They are forcing me to verify via my bank -- I am NOT interested in this option and wanted to get the feedback. Before I go this route, I'll also query my back (B of A) about their experience and recommendation. I don't understand the devotion to PayPal on the part of so many eBay users when Paypal makes life so difficult. Bill
whorg Posted August 31, 2006 Share #15 Posted August 31, 2006 This is what I remember: A verified account takes a few days, and requires PayPal to deduct $1 USD, then deposit it back again into your bank account. It also verifies your home address as matching the one on the bank account . . . Many vendors prefer using PayPal (verified) that hits a "bank account", as they avoid paying an "extra percentage" that PayPal charges for a purchase hitting a credit card. Luigi is an excellent example of a vendor that follows this path. His E-Bay items describe his payment routine, check it out. Since I'm a prolific E-Bay'er . . . I keep a separate checking account just for that purpose, but if PayPal was hacked, that's the chance I must take . . . so be it. ~jk
pascal_meheut Posted August 31, 2006 Share #16 Posted August 31, 2006 I don't understand the devotion to PayPal on the part of so many eBay users when Paypal makes life so difficult. Bill Quite the contrary. Every sales I've made recently on EBay was paid by the winner in the hour and transferred to my bank account in just a few clicks. Same when I need to pay. Made my life a lot simpler than cashing checks or sending a fax to my bank requesting a international money transfer taking up to 3 weeks with no tracking... grober Posted August 31, 2006 Share #17 Posted August 31, 2006 PayPal is reliable and fast although their fees are a bit steep. Time for some competition in this area I should think. -g
pascal_meheut Posted August 31, 2006 Share #18 Posted August 31, 2006 As long as EBay as a monopolistic position on Internet auctions, competition will be hard as they own Paypal.
albertwang Posted August 31, 2006 Share #19 Posted August 31, 2006 Indeed, paypal and ebay collusion is the manifestation of the new world order. Again, take caution at your own risk. I prefer to use credit card because I can argue all questionable charges. With paypal, you receive the black hole of deficit!
earleygallery Posted August 31, 2006 Share #20 Posted August 31, 2006 Indeed, paypal and ebay collusion is the manifestation of the new world order. Again, take caution at your own risk. I prefer to use credit card because I can argue all questionable charges. With paypal, you receive the black hole of deficit! True, that's been my problem recently although Paypal have refunded me most of the money, its just annoying that they don't refund you 100% (letter off to credit card company today). But, as my bank charges about £20 to make a foreign currency transfer, plus exchange rate charges, Paypal is just so much easier, quicker and cheaper if buying stuff from o/s on e bay.
