I like the the second photograph!

I always try to get the graphic elements put together in an interesting way.  Hopefully focus is then one of the last things a viewer considers.

I would say your second picture looks fine, I like it. Problem with the first picture (in my view) is that you have some(other)thing in focus in that picture, so the eye is directed towards that area. So, my point is that an out-of-focus picture might "work" if there is nothing in focus in it.
