Well Steve - a little googling brought up this - I'm not saying it's accurate, but it makes some sense:

I Quote:

The Leica Q3 43's lens was a collaborative effort, with the initial optical design created by Japanese designers

Takehiro Nishioka and Yoshiaki Kurioka, and a significant part of the design also attributed to Panasonic, who reportedly hold the patent rights. Leica then integrated this design into the final camera, adding its own knowledge, technology, and craftsmanship, including the APO (Apochromatic)designation and features like digital lens distortion correction

Unquote

The Lens for the Q3 on the other hand seems to have been designed by Peter Karbe

thanks very much for that research , it makes perfect sense and in fairness that is what the partnership with Panasonic is all about.

I think so as well - and clearly it was done as a collaboration, as (as far as I'm aware) Panasonic are not using the design - but of course I could be wrong.

"The M-EV1 is answering a question that nobody asked. Just my opinion. Have you bought one?"

Yes, and:

As stated elsewhere, the concept did not come from Leica, it was requested in Ireland by members of LSI. So Leica answered a question that users asked.

I am very used to using EVF now on SLs and Qs. I thought I would miss leaving the fantastic optical viewfinder of the S, but I am now used to electronic viewing. Therefore I traded in my M11 with external EVF six months ago in wait for the M V1. I so disliked external EVF sticking up.  I retain an M10P. I use an SL3 with a 100-400 for when I need a telephoto, an SL 90 for aerial and a 14-24 zoom when I am doing serious landscape work. I use a Q43 for portrait work with it set as a 75mm. For a an everyday camera, admittedly an expensive casual camera, I will be using my M V1 with a 18mm, with a collapsable 90mm in my pocket. When I used it  yesterday I was using it one handed with thumb rest with zone focus which is all one needs with an 18mm. The resolution allows for cropping to a 75mm and I did a few times. If I need video I go to an iPhone. But for the poster's question, he made the right decision to stay with the Q he has. He definitely needs AF.  For the first time in a long time for casual family gathering shots I used a Leica more than my iPhone. The one handed handling is difficult with an iPhone. The iPhone lacks an EVF. But the quality of photos with a cellphone is fantastic. It's just not as fun to shoot with.

But, as Stefan Daniel confirmed, the original M11 was designed with the possibility of incorporating an EVF, which is why implementation was eased and costs were minimized after feedback suggested the timing was finally right.  And since the M11 debuted in 2022, Leica had the insight and foresight quite a while before that.

Yes, they did  build M11 with hindsight of making it an EVF only camera,  but they apparently clearly decided against it and would have never launched it without the pressure from LSI.

All hail LSI!

That’s why I wrote that the timing was finally right.
