Hi,

I recently purchased this Leica II and was just curious about the serial number engraving.

it was listed as 88294 and Leica have confirmed that that serial number is a 1932 Model II and it was shipped to New York. I believe that the ones shipped to New York has ‘made in Germany’ on the hot shoe so maybe it has worn away.

When I took a picture with forced flash it does make the engraving on the numbers appear a little strange. Or do you think it’s a trick of the light?

The first 3 digits are clearly 882 but that fourth  digit? And the last one could almost be a 1?

I can’t see any other images of top plates with such engraving. Do you think the engraver was just having a bad day?

I love the camera but just want to know the serial number and maybe I’m just confusing myself when I don’t need to.

Does anyone have any similar examples or opinions on the serial number . Thanks.

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I know it’s not a hot shoe.😂

yeah I thought it could be a zero but why the two circles in the middle?

This page has a good photo of the top plate of a Leica II Mod. D. The numeral 8 might help you to determine what your fourth digit is:

I was surprised to see the differences in the shutter speed dials.

After a bit of tinkering I’m pretty sure it’s  01 at the end . It matches the digits in the Leica auction.

what did you mean differences in the shutter speed dials? I can’t see any difference between them. Thanks

You are welcome.

I had thought that your shutter speed dial lacked the 500 mark, but it turns out that it was obscured on my screen by glare!

serial number is engraved as well under the top cover. In the case camera was delivered before June 1932 this number might be scribed, not engraved.
