I have often wondered the same thing.

Yes, there is the Collectors and Historica subforum, but its subtitle is 'This forum is about collecting Leica cameras and lenses. Historica and photographica - whatever the Leica collector wants!'.

For those actually using such cameras for photography that is not an obvious place to go. I am not a collector, but I have three Barnacks that I use regularly.

when did you get the 3rd one?

Have you been counting?😉

I bought all three in early 2022: iif, II Model D and Standard. They all came with Elmar 5cm, but I use them with two Nikkors (2.8cm and 3.5cm), a Summitar 50mm and a Summaron 3.5cm f/2.8.

I've wondered this too. I regularly use my Barnacks and LTM lenses (although I do collect them too). Perhaps the 'Collectors and Historica' sub-forum could be renamed to something like, 'Collectors, Users and Historica'?

I would rather see a separate forum for screw thread Leicas. After all, there was quite a long overlap between LTM and M mount bodies - if Barnacks are for just collectors and historica, so are the M1-M3!

Spot on. The collectors forum is great for nerdy questions and interesting history, but I've never felt it did a good job of promoting the using of Barnack Leica's. There are so many available together with LTM lenses at far less cost than an M and they can still make great photographs. Perhaps it needs a new sub-forum, or does the title of the Collectors Forum just need changing?

This would be my first idea – but I'm not really deep into this topic.

What do you think what a sensible structure would be?

We have to make sure that all sections need enough interest and traffic to flourish.

In general we already have too many sub-sections, so I'm a bit reluctant to create additional subforums.

Nether the R nor the S forums (other ILC forums) have any sub-forums. But how about:

  • Leica screw-mount cameras
  • Leica screw-mount lenses
  • Other LTM equipment

This excludes the first Leicas with fixed lenses and Null Series Replica, but perhaps the name of the first subforum could be tweaked to include them.

Or the Collectors and Historica subform could be left just as it is and a new subform called something like Barnack Users Forum could be added with a description saying it is for users of Leica LTM camera and lenses.

Two observations: The participants in the Barnack Challenge are enthusiastic but there are not many of them. These days using LTM cameras and lenses has become a niche within a niche. And because so many Leica LTM compatible cameras and lenses were made during the Leica LTM era many, perhaps a majority, of Leica LTM camera or lens users also use non-Leica LTM bodies and lenses. I know there were similar issues with the Leica L-Mount forum.
