I have ordered a Q3. Sold my Q2 to pay for it.

I have looked at a lot of reviews and it looks promissing. One thing I find disapointing though. There seems to be no option to choose to see the cropped view instead of the frame lines. I understand people want to see outside the lines to see what's coming (like a rangefinder), but at 75mm I'd rather see the actual frame. This would make composing a lot easier. (Yes I use Lightroom and shoot Raw, so I know I can change it afterwards)

I call out to Leica (in a friendly way) to please give us this option.

I also hope there is an option to re-center the focus point with a function button....Using the screen is not so conveniant with the camera to your face.

No I wait......for the camera LOL

The closest you get is 1 sec preview mode which allows you to see the cropped image just after, as the cropped shot you have just taken.

I believe the idea of cropped image is great; the lens and sensor is made to be able to make it work. For Leica to have success with this concept (which people haven't really liked so far in Q, Q2 and Q3), it would help if the cropped view was the "full image" in crop. Frame lines are nice, but it's a Leica M thing and it's been repeated again and again as a feature that "you can see what is happening outside the frame".

Yes Thorsten That is precisely what I mean. More then enough pixels and probably more then enough processing power with the new Processor. Being a celeb maybe you can put a word in with Leica 😉

@TDE Photo. Yes you are right, not on the Q2 either. That was a shame as well. But this is a good idea right?

If they‘d make it so that the view would jump to a 50mm aeq. view when in 75 and 90mm crop mode everyone would win. I agree that the 75 and 90mm view modes are hardly usable when framing with the camera. If I need that thight of a crop I‘d rather do it in post. It’s just not appropriate to frame an image like it’s implemented right now in 75 or 90mm

I love the frame lines with 35mm crop and the 50mm crop. With 75, or than with the Q3 90mm crop, it is a tough one.

Also the 1sec preview trick or shutter press function only works if you are in jpg or dng+jpg. If you shoot in dng-only, as I usually do, the camera just shows the 28mm picture with the frame line - which is a bit unfortunate.

Best would be to have the choice - but if wishes were horses …..

Is that what happens with the Q3? With the Q2, which I always set to DNG only, and with AutoReview set to 'shutter pressed', just holding the button down after a shot shows the cropped image.

Hmm, interesting. I have the Q2 and just double checked. Camera is set to DNG, AutoReview is set to ‚shutter pressed‘. When crop mode is activated to e.g. 50mm, and I take the picture and keep the shutter pressed, the preview shows me the 28mm picture with the crop-frame (thin white line). Only in dng+jpg or jpg only the preview shows the cropped picture.

Do I miss something? Because, I would definitely prefer your version.

I'm sorry - it does NOT work as I said - I have just checked.

My memory must have been at fault - yet my recollection (from a couple of weeks ago) is very clear! I can't think what other setting I might have made that could have resulted in the crop being displayed. I shall keep an eye on it.

I've always wanted to have the crop choice fill the frame,

I photographed a wedding at the weekend, wanting to use the Q3 as much as possible, but had the A1+50GM1.2 over my shoulder.

There came a moment where I tried the Q3 50mm crop to compose an image in camera, I just couldn't trust it - the compositional mess around the 50mm crop in the preview of the image was distracting.

I've used the 50mm crop before for live music and it worked out fine, just that for a wedding I didn't want the doubt hanging over me.

Yeah, you can change it post, but it would be better to have that option and see what you're doing. Als good ifyou want to send a JPG through the FOTOS app. Personally I think that whole thing about "lokking outside of the frame lines to see what is coming"is a bit overrated. The margin on screen between 28 and 25mm is so small, I doubt one can realy use it. But like I said It would be an excelent choise. I am not one to have an opnion about the way other peple shoot.

What is the objection to using DNG + JPG ?

In the vast majority of my use-cases I don't use the JPG, so it's scrap I don't want to carry, transfer, sort out or delete afterwards.

What is your approach? Maybe I am to boneheaded there

I agree it would be better if there was a zoom when i crop at 75 and 90.
Another wish : the possibility of seeing jpg and raw files and not only jpeg files when I check the result on the camera screen. I enjoy shooting in black and white in jpeg (and so the raw file is in colour) but I have to wait the transfer of the 2 pictures to see the color version.

Like you, I shoot mainly with the jpeg set to b&w and I agree it would be nice to have the option to see b&w and colour versions of the same file, not least in case someone wants to see the picture I’ve just taken of them and expects to see it in colour. However, I think raw is just a spreadsheet of 1s and 0s and is only converted into an image when you download it into a piece of software that has a raw converter (eg LR). So the camera would need to generate a colour jpeg as well as a b&w jpeg as well as retaining the raw file. Too complicated for me!

Hello,

I imagine this topic has already been discussed, but I can't find it on the forum.

Do you think Leica will one day add, via firmware, a feature allowing the Q3 (and maybe the Q and Q2) to :

1- View a full-frame preview of the cropped photo ? Because beyond 35mm, it's extremely complicated to frame correctly, especially with grids. At 90mm, I won't even mention it...

2- Have the ability to crop to a 2.35:1 "panoramic" format, or at least be able to display markers to facilitate framing, like the Sony A7CR, for example ?

Given the resolution of our Q3s, it would be really great to integrate these functions.

This has been discussed extensively here and elsewhere  many times.

If you want to request this, you would need to contact Leica directly I suggest.
