Minigill Posted June 22 Share #1 Posted June 22 (edited) Advertisement (gone after registration) Today I was out at the local car show, I happily snapped 150 pics, auto ISO, 1/250, 1/360, 1/500, f8. With 21mm was using live view quite a bit. It froze, popped battery out, screen would not show anything either using menu or live view. Felt sluggish on the shutter. In the bright sun I tried to view the last pics it took but they were a total white screen. Screen was hit and miss working. Obviously nothing I could do unti home, changed the battery to check. Menu screen is back, but no live view, have re-set camera. Looking at the playback, it was at auto iso 160 and all was fine, the next photo which was literally move 2" and take different angle of car, the auto iso went to 16000 in bright sunlight and the next couple of photo's were the same. Shutter 1/360, f8. The photo's are 1000% blown out bright white with the tinest outline of a car. Now testing, using auto ISO it is sticking to what ever max iso is set to. It does not change from say being indoors to bright sunlight in the garden. Still no live view. If I manually change ISO it works, albeit no live view. I am not on the latest firmware. What do we think? Thankyou. Edited June 22 by Minigill
Advertisement Posted June 22 Posted June 22 Hi Minigill, Take a look here M11 malfunction. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MaxGor Posted June 22 Share #2 Posted June 22 (edited) I am not a tech camera expert, but live view always should work. Do you have the latest firmware installed? Very sorry to hear about your troubles with such a fine camera. Get it back to Leica - I am visiting often their boutique at Mayfair or might be better to contract tech department directly. Just found their contacts: Customer Care on 020 7478 9131 or by email customercare.UK@leica-camera.com. Edited June 22 by MaxGor

Mayfair can send it on for you but cannot service M cameras.
Minigill Posted June 22 Author Share #4 Posted June 22 Yeah I think its poorly also ! Maybe they can look at the magenta !!! I have warranty with Leica and good to hear Mayfair can send it back. Now for the first time in ages, I only have one camera... trying to think of options to get me through a few months when it is time of the year for pics. LocalHero1953 Posted June 22 Share #5 Posted June 22 Given the weather, and that you used liveview a lot, I wonder if this is heat related. It shouldn't happen, but I'm just speculating about causes. FWIW I felt a hot sensation in my pocket yesterday, and found that my phone had started the camera (well, I must have done so accidentally). The screen was producing a lot of heat that could not dissipate.
jdlaing Posted June 22 Share #6 Posted June 22 What was the temperature outside?
Minigill Posted June 22 Author Share #7 Posted June 22 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was using live view just to check whats in frame probably about 6 times for a brief couple of seconds in all the 150 photo's, rest of the time it was off. I did wonder about heat, the battery was cold as was the camera when I took it out after the freeze. One way to stop me taking lots of shots

The sunlight and frequency of use (number of images) may have taken the camera to a heat level that made it react. How is it working now?
Elliot Harper Posted June 22 Share #12 Posted June 22 (edited) I think the shutter doesn’t open to meter ? M11 always have the shutter curtain open as soon as it’s turned on, so it can constantly meter. That’s also why you hear that horrendous stapler sound when you turn it on. Live view doesn’t work, auto ISO stuck to max. That’s a typical sign of shutter refusing to open to meter. You still can take pictures with full manual mode. M11 is know to this issue. I remember I saw a YouTube with this issue before. Edited June 22 by Elliot Harper

No live screen still, ISO on auto but its stuck on what ever the max ISO setting is i.e. 3200, 1600. It does not change in bright light or indoors, sticks at say 3200. If I use manual iso, that works ok. Kinda working but not fully 😕 Have done factory re set, no change.

It’s known issue, many people reported it years ago. See this post here This is exactly the same issue. You can’t do anything about it, send it back for warranty repair. I sent one down to Leica UK. Sat there for 10 days before I got any notification. At 10 days it was we are shipping to Germany, may take 3 weeks. So nearly 5 weeks before it’s got anywhere near repair and likely the same on the way back. It’s simply embarrassing. I realise some of it is down to Brexit but I get the feeling they are just batching them to save hassle and shipping.

Kiwimac Posted June 23 Share #19 Posted June 23 Pretty soon you’ll need a very high income indeed to own two current M bodies. It’s worth remembering the SL line, which will shoot M lenses with the appropriate adapter so would be a good backup that can be had for quite a bit less pre-owned than most M digital bodies.
