Sometime last year, I started planning another trip to Canada—and I’m actually still in the middle of it now. This time, the main destination was Newfoundland, which, as I’ve come to realize, even Canadians think of as pretty remote. And if that’s not remote enough, you can always go one step further—to Fogo Island. (Which I did. That’s where the iceberg photo comes from.)

Other stops on the Newfoundland leg of the trip, in order: Trinity, Fogo Island, Gros Morne National Park, Triton, and St. John’s. After that, I headed to Manitoba for family reasons, and finally wrapped things up in Montréal.

As for what I was hoping to photograph: epic landscapes (check), whales (check), puffins (check), wild birds (check), and moose (nope—missed those). The planning wasn’t always smooth—Newfoundland isn’t exactly built for mass tourism, and the airline rescheduled us more than once, which didn’t help. But as usual, it was a fully DIY trip (thanks to @stuny )

Anyway, since I’ve got a bit of breathing room today, I figured I’d start putting together the skeleton of a travel report—and post the first photo. More coming soon....

Hello BlackDoc,

Nice photo.

When you were on Fogo, did you go to Funk?

Montreal has good restaurants with food from Cultures from all over the Planet. Just stay away from the central touristy area & you will find someplace nice with what you will like from pretty much everywhere.

Best Regards,

Michael

Thanks, Michael! No, we didn’t make it out to Funk Island. Instead, we spent time exploring Gros Morne National Park, and also visited Elliston — home to one of the largest puffin colonies in North America — as well as Witless Bay, which is actually the biggest seabird colony on the continent, and second only to Iceland when it comes to puffins and common murres.

Also, I just found out that since 2025, WestJet has been offering direct flights from Dublin to St. John’s. And since Dublin is such an easy-to-reach hub from our area (and most of Northern Europe), the odds of us returning to Newfoundland just went up quite a bit!
From St. John’s, we made our way to Trinity on the Bonavista Peninsula — but not without a quick detour to the Dildo Brewery. Thanks to a bit of international fame (remember Jimmy Kimmel’s shoutout? Here’s a CBC article about it: CBC – Jimmy Kimmel and Dildo), the brewery has definitely become a bit of a household name. And yes — it’s just as quirky and fun as the name suggests.

As for the photos.... (and just to mention, up to 90mm I have tried to use at least a polarizer, in landscape + soft ND as well)

Our actual destination was Trinity — a charming little place with loads of character… and very limited cell service. (Pro tip for anyone traveling in Canada: bring some good old-fashioned paper maps and don’t count on the internet or Google to get you around.)

From here, we had our first boat tour planned.

Even on this very first tour, I got to tick off some serious bucket list items: whales (including a sperm whale that, according to local whale watchers, had never been recorded in their databases before!) and puffins and multiple iceberg sightings — all wrapped in morning fog that gradually gave way to sunshine. The light, the atmosphere… it was almost magical, especially from a photographer’s point of view.

And yes, I’ll try to limit myself with the number of photos I share next… but no promises!

We also did some hiking on one of the moist beautiful scenic coastal ways of Northern America ( Bonavista area) and on this trail we saw these cuties:

Next day we went to Fogo Island and while sitting in the car waiting for the ferry I realized an atypical movement above the trees- and I had to hurry...

When the ferry started I realized there where TWO of them next to the harbor, unfortunately I was to slow...

Fogo does have some spectacular architecture inspired by the Fogo Island Inn ( see #17)

Thank you all for your patience in looking through so many photos from our trip to Canada. Today is the last day of the journey, and after visiting many sights and hotspots, I (unfortunately) finally have some time again to sort through the pictures... and I am still not finished ...
