  1. 1. Should only pictures taken with Leica equipment be allowed in the Leica Forum?

    • Generally also images taken with L-mount cameras or lenses

    • Special threads or sub-forums for pictures taken with L-mount cameras or lenses from other manufacturers

The M mount is an open mount that Leica has no connection with, except by being the original designer

What a strange thing to say about the company that gave us M3, M2, M4 etc.

Then you should modify the 3rd option, which currently says "Special threads or sub-forums for pictures taken with L-mount cameras or lenses from other manufacturers" to "Special threads or sub-forums for pictures taken with L-mount cameras AND lenses from other manufacturers"

But perhaps this is actually a suitable solution for those who want tighter fences, separating the images with too few Leica genes into their own subforums.

Using a Leica camera qualifies them under all circumstances.

Sample borderline case:

  • Sigma camera with Panasonic lens (L-Mount but no Leica product)

Oops, my bad, missed the 'or' on the first line, speed read it as 'and'.

Before my time (I'm from 2004) but I'm 99.9% sure that it was not allowed as this forum was a Leica-owned one back then.

In the age of pixel images, no other picture can be displayed in the WEB, the discusion about brands are opsolete.
The only way out of this desaster is to bann any post produktion and allow only virgen out of the cam JPGs.
but ist this a creativ way of photografy and dicusion.
BTW Leica programmed a APP to bring the 'L-Look' to your mobil!
Is a picture that is taken with a digital M, composed on the screen and focused through a Visoflex a true Leica M picture?
So why we need restrictions?

Very restrictive, I’d rather be a part of more open society than be a member of  elitist group. I think it’s better to exchange experiences across different brands, On the other hand it’s in the name it depends on upper echelons to decide how strict to be in enforcing it. I don’t think I know any Leica user who didn’t own lenses or camera from different brand. If I were to build group identity I would rather build it around general leicaesque experience than strict brand following. But that’s just me

Being member of one forum does not prohibit you from being member of another one as well.

Let‘s look again at the wording of the Forum Rules as they exist now:

Prerequisite for placing a photo is that it has been made with Leica ir L-Mount equipment and/or has a strong relationship to a Leica subject. For the avoidance of doubt, this includes the use of Leica lenses on third party bodies, Leica lenses on Leica partner cameras (e.g. Panasonic) and the use of third party lenses on Leica bodies. In general, photographs taken without the use of Leica or L-Mount equipment are not permitted.

I read „that it has been made with Leica ir L-mount equipment“ as „…or L-Mount equipment“. The last quoted sentence makes clear that photographs taken with L-Mount equipment only (Sigma lens on Panasonic L-mount camera, or vice versa) is no „border case“ but completely according to the rules.

So the poll’s second choice „Generally also images taken with L-mount cameras or lenses“ does not imply any changes of rules and/or practice. The two other choices are restrictions compared to the present rules. I don‘t understand the last choice: would photos taken with a Leica camera and a Sigma lens be not allowed in this subforum? Can‘t imagine that, though if they are allowed the subforum makes no difference to what we already know from the L-Forum.

I think option one is the right path.

The Leica photographer, or a lot of us, may be using non Leica M lenses or Lenses within our system, sometimes not to save money, but because it fits a purpose. Likewise we may be using our lenses on other systems because the “Leica” lens has a very specific DNA that make it stand out.

I would argue, though, that perhaps it should be mandatory to list equipment with every image post, because a lot of the value of the forum is the reference it gives us to the equipment and its use.  The discussions are as valuable as the images if, for example, I want to know what the actual performance of a specific body or lens is on real world use.

But at least the body or the lens should be Leica. Otherwise we have flicker or instagram etc if we’re just displaying photos.

exception would be system comparison threads.

I just understood that I am repeated offender of rule against writing about other lenses. I probably wouldn’t survive a day back in 2000.
The problem is about exclusivity and inclusivity self definition and where to put the line between us and them. Usually when asking about identity groups would use apophatic definitions what we are not as in “we are not like those smelly Panasonic shooters” but usually there was quite a wide margin between us and a group we defined against, and those living in this space have characteristics of both groups belonging to a and b. Now this marginal space got really wide. You could exclude them but they’ll still exist and probably thanks to their hybrid status will adapt better to the world and segregate or embrace them and call them part of our people, which will weaken the core values of the group( slowly eroding since Leica-Minolta times) but do we lose our identity letting them in?

If you can discuss in German (shouldn't be too difficult given the translate functions your computer offers) you can use any of our sister forums, which are linked to at the bottom of the page.

I just understood that…

I don‘t think you understood.

The Forum‘s rules do not exclude „Pansonic shooters.“ Neither do they hinder me to post anything elsewhere - as long as I follow the rules of this other community.

So, no pictures made with the Leica Lux app?

Up to Andreas - you could always request a separate subform.

I think that anyone who posts pictures on this forum has enough affiliation with Leica to be allowed to do so.

(sounds weird, is it correct English?)

I definitely would like to prohibit boring pictures, lookatmypet pictures, pictures that need explanations and so on.
When I found this forum I noticed quite fast that the only thing that is not obvious on a Leica is the “delete” button.

Most important thing is to have fun, not discriminate on brands. Would it be enough to wear a Leica watch while taking beautiful pictures with your iPhone?
