Some time back Leica sent a survey to customers trying to determine their interest in lower cost lenses.  I'm guessing the re-badged Sigma and Panasonic lenses are in response to the survey results.

For portraiture from the SL lens line up, Summilux... without question!. It's so worth lugging it around. There is just something about the way it masters the light.

When all is said and done …… I have many 50’s M’s & SL’s (including SL 50 Apo) the SL Lux is my number one. I hate the weight & size , but it’s beauty makes me overlook those issues

The SL 50 Lux is truly an incredible portrait lens, without a doubt my top choice. Despite its weight, it is by far my favorite SL lens. I tried the 50 APO, but ultimately stuck with the Lux. When the Sigma 50mm f/1.2 was released, I bought it and shot it side by side with the 50 Lux, it’s obviously faster and lighter. However, I found the out-of-focus areas rather nervous, whereas the rendering of the 50 Lux is much more pleasing. This lens draws in a stunningly beautiful way. I use it very often, also for everyday photography alongside my Q3. It’s the perfect combo. The images I get with the Lux are more than worth carrying the extra weight, no doubt about it.

Besides 50mm, all SL primes are APO. I have seen some great portraiture done with them.  Clinical is only an issue for photographers, most clients would love a clean and crisp image.

I’d gather you don’t shoot portraits for work? Clinical rendering is rough for portraits, and it means more potential retouching work. Clients want a clean and crisp image depending on the sort of job they also expect not to see hairs growing out of moles, wayward lipstick, acne, etc in the finest of rendered detail.
