0xjohn Posted June 4 Share #1 Posted June 4 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello I came across this Summicron 35mm 8 element on marketplace, and this lens has a serial number of 2010546: which falls into the Summicron 3.5 cm 1:2 (11108), and it should be a goggle version according to https://wiki.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/Summicron_(I)_f%3D_3.5_cm_1:2 However, I didn't find any visible modification trace on the lens itself, and the seller claims that this lens is originally designed for M3, not M2. Can anyone help me identify if this is true or the seller got mistaken. Thanks a a lot! Welcome, dear visitor! Carlos cruz Posted June 4 Share #2 Posted June 4 Usually lenses with goggles had minimum focus of 0,65 those for m2s had 0,7 mfd. I’ve seen some really nice examples of reworked lenses but usually minimum focus is a giveaway.
0xjohn Posted June 4 Author Share #3 Posted June 4 hi @Carlos cruzthanks for the reply! yes at first I thought minimum focus is the key to differentiate them. until I came across another goggle 8 elements but with a 0.7m of minimum focus distance Welcome, dear visitor! Carlos cruz Posted June 4 Share #4 Posted June 4 Apparently I haven’t seen enough, maybe some specialists from historica section can explain or just a “Monday lens” when QC was having a day off
sandro Posted June 4 Share #5 Posted June 4 In Thiele (Großes Fabrikationsbuch Leica-Objektive) I find that this lens belongs to a group of 1500 Summicron 2/35 lenses produced in Midland, part of which group had goggles. So this may be one of non-goggled lenses of that group. Lex
0xjohn Posted June 4 Author Share #6 Posted June 4 hi @sandro so not all 1500 lens from this batch are goggled version? because from the website https://wiki.l-camera-forum.com/leica-wiki.en/index.php/Summicron_(I)_f%3D_3.5_cm_1:2 it says all are 11108, which are with goggled. I haven't checked the Thiele (Großes Fabrikationsbuch Leica-Objektive) you mentioned before.
UliWer Posted June 4 Share #7 Posted June 4 Advertisement (gone after registration) You cannot rely on any of the lists when it comes to details. So looking at the lens itsself is more reliable. As your example doesn‘t indicate anything which might be attributed to a (former) goggled version (at least I don’t notice anything) you can be sure that it was an original M2-version.
luigi bertolotti Posted June 6 Share #8 Posted June 6 Me too think that is a std. M2 version : the fact that goggled Summicrons with 0,7 instead of 0,65 do exist is a someway intriguing question... I have a vague feeling that is related to Canada factory... (don't remember to have seen goggled "Wetzlars" with 0,7) but would like to know something more about...

I've ordered the lens and after I get the chance to test it, I'll let you all know the result and some observations of it. Thank a lot!
