With a 28mm fixed lens Q3 you're mostly going to notice a slightly wrong focus point up close on a portrait at f1.7 on single shot, any longer and it won't make much difference, up that close you could move back or forward with your head if on single shot. Agree there will be times when it will have selected the wrong thing in the middle distance and manual override will allow a quicker rectification than trying to half press the shutter again but the cost of that is an endless encoder style focus barrel and I'd much rather than a focus barrel with a hard minimum and maximum focus distance. It's a trade of course. You can also see it as a quick way to switch from AF to MF. Hold the shutter button half-pressed and turn the focus ring to focus manually. By the way, I do not use that technique; I use BBF (no focusing on the shutter button).
Advertisement Posted May 20 Posted May 20 Hi SrMi, Take a look here Can you override the Q3 autofocus by manually turning the lens focus ring?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!

Interesting - I didn't know that: thanks Edited May 20 by JNK100

You can do that on the Q3 camera by: "quick way to switch from AF to MF. Hold the shutter button half-pressed and turn the focus ring to focus manually."? (that's what I ask for, but is it?) I was explaining why people may want to have it.

BBF is Back Button Focusing, where focus operation is disconnected from the shutter button and is typically initiated with a button on the back of the camera instead. I often use BBF on my SL2 (with 24-90). I also set focus ring turn for magnification, so that I can examine focus more closely on subject if desired. Sometimes, however, after BBF and zooming in to fine tune with focus ring, I depress the shutter release halfway to bring back full view, only to find that when I then take the shot, the subject is no longer in focus (subject hasn’t moved). Not always, but sometimes. Can you reason why?

Dose the Q3 has "BBF"? Is it different from "Focusing lock" function?

Q3 does not have BBF functionality; It is different from function lock. It completely disables focusing with the shutter button and triggers focusing only via a function button. If the subject I want to focus on is at one corner of the frame, do I point the Q3 camera to there first, then recompose the frame while halfway holding the shutter? But how about if the exposure value is not what I want for that corner??

You can move the focus point to where you need to focus. If you do not want to do that, you either have to use manual focusing or focus and recompose while holding the shutter button half-pressed.
