FrankU Posted May 13 Share #1 Posted May 13 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can I name my Leica Q3 files by the day they were shot somehow? The Q3 now names them by a useless long number that relates - apparently - to the number of shots taken on the SD card. I do not care about that. A 'day of the year taken' name would order them in a much better way and I have to do that now with every new import to Lightroom C where I cannot decipher which days the importing images belong to. Has anyone figured this out, I wonder again. That would save so mch tedious work on my side. Thanks FrankU
Advertisement Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Hi FrankU, Take a look here Leica File naming with shooting day data. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Le Chef Posted May 13 Share #2 Posted May 13 (edited) If you look closely the file names have more detail: 20240430-L1010751 20240430 = 2024 April 30 (US numbering for dates) L1010751 = 751 shots taken with this Leica camera to date since the last firmware update. Mine are all processed in LightRoom Classic Edited May 13 by Le Chef

All mine are renamed automatically to DDMMYY-HHMM-SS by Photo Mechanic Plus when I initially ingest them from the SD card. Previously, before doing that in Photo Mechanic, I did the same in Capture One when importing new photos. I'm sure there's a lot of other photo software that can do the same. Mine are all processed in LightRoom Classic I'm struggling with the same issue and I don't have this prefix that you seem to mention. It only uses "L100xxxx.DNG" and my Lightroom Mobile app seems to struggle with duplicate filenames, resulting in some pictures being skipped on import. The date is in the EXIF data but does not appear to be attached to the file name in any meaningful way (i.e. as a way of giving a very distinct file name even if the LXXXXXXX name/number is duplicated). One "feature" I discovered was that when resetting the camera (in my case the auto reset after a firmware update via SD card) if there is not an image file on the SD card with the last image's file number, the next picture taken will be 0000 for the last 4 numbers of the file name. The first 3 numbers of the file name describe the folder the image is in. For example, L1000001 is a "L" (Leica) file in folder 100LEICA which is in the DCIM folder on the SD card. (Not sure if when after the 9,999 image are taken and the folder changes to 101LEICA if the folder number stays 101LEICA on reset or also starts over again). As my Nikons do not have this "feature" I was unaware of it and did manage to have a couple of hundred duplicate file names (albeit in different folders so no loss of images and an easy fix). As far as I know the only file name parameter that a user can change is the letter (change the "L" to another letter). I have 2 digital Leicas, one with the "L" the other changed to "Q". LocalHero1953 Posted July 21 Share #7 Posted July 21 Advertisement (gone after registration) That's not what I see in LR CC on my laptop. I can't check LR Classic till later this week. Are you sure you don't have an import preset that renames the files?
Robert Ardinger Posted July 21 Share #8 Posted July 21 (edited) This is what I see and I went through all the possible LR Classic data choices to see if I was missing something. By any chance do you have a preset to add the date on import? (BTW, This is the camera I changed the "L" to "Q" on). Welcome, dear visitor! SrMi Posted July 21 Share #9 Posted July 21 At LrC import, I organize my files into folders named by the date the picture was taken. E.g., 2025 > 2025-07-20. You can also rename filenames to a date-filename template, e.g., 20250717-L0123.DNG. It is all in the import dialog panels on the right side.

Yes, on import to LR there are a number of things that can be set as a preset. It is just that natively I did not find that the camera added the date to the file name as suggested. In LR, on import, the date can be preset to be added before or after or instead of, etc. but this is a user defined preset in LR, not an addition by the camera. Robert Ardinger Posted July 21 Share #15 Posted July 21 And thanks to Le Chef as I was pretty sure the camera did not add the date but I really never looked to see what LR would do and just now set a preset to add the date to my files (although I added it after the file name). Alexander108 Posted July 22 Share #16 Posted July 22 1) I always create a new folder at the end of the day after importing the latest folder: Menu Camera Settings / Reset Image Numbering. This creates a new folder 100LEICA , 101LEICA , 102LEICA. It is not ideal but it reduces confusion. 2) I always rename my images in LR after importing them. I also make the title part of the filename for easier search capabilities. This is my pattern: Welcome, dear visitor!
