Hello all,

I recently purchase an exquisite copy of this lens from Japan. I had been searching a long time to find one from 1958 to match my 1958 M3 DS. It came with an adapter for mounting to bayonet and works wonderfully with the M3. It also provides amazing close focus results with SOMKY goggles which I purchased elsewhere! However when I try to use it on my M11M or M11 with the included adapter it just freaks out and will not work at all. It basically starts doing the funky chicken making all sort of noises and renders the shutter button non functional and the live view will not display. I was worried that I had damaged my M11 but that was not the case because when mounting any of my modern lenses all worked perfectly. Do I need to purchase a special or specific LTM to M adapter to allow proper function with my digital bodies? A friend who is also a Leica user suggested I should try a Rayquel adapter but they did not know for sure about proper function. I would like to get some advice from people who know prior to just experimenting with different adapters.

I was hoping someone here might have experienced something similar and could share a solution and possibly knowledge that might help me understand what is happening and why. I don't understand why it works with the film body perfectly and not on the M11. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. BTW The lens will work properly on the M11 when attached to the SOMKY goggles first but only for close focus no focus to infinity. Thanks...

Not sure if this is the right place for this post, if not please let me know.

  • galleryg changed the title to 5cm f2.8 Elmar LTM assistance inquiry

I turned off the automatic lens detection and that did not fix the situation. Also regarding the bayonet version of the lens. I wanted the LTM version so I could use it with my Leica III also.

Regarding the pictured Leitz adapter how should I word the search inquiry? Any suggestions where I might find one?

Do you retract the Elmar on M11 ? I think is not advisable... or even explicitly forbidden...

Also, the problem of code reader "uncovered" can make something not working even if you set lens detection off : I don't have M11, but so is on my M240, and if the cutout on the  LTM adapter clears the reading strip, the problem persists, original or not: I have a Voigtlander LTM adapter with no cutout (and still allows the usage of Elmars with infinity lock) which works fine.

Sorry, but I don't understand the problems.

With my M10 and M10 Monochrom I use many different 50mm lenses with LTM and the original Leica adapters who all have the cutout at the position of the 6-bit-sensor.

When I leave "lens detection" on "auto" the camera's rear screen tells me that there was no lens attached. As soon as I switch off lens detection there is no problem. Only when I want to use LiveView the shutter closes and LiveView doesn't work.

With a certain firmware (I don't remember the number) the M11 got a new function for "sensor protection" which closes the shutter when there is no lens attached (and the camera is still switched on). With LTM adapters which have the cutout the shutter didn't open as the camera still "thought" it had no lens. This was corrected by the next Firmware version, so that you could switch off this new function.

So, with lens detection switched off, function for "sensor protection" switched off and using the usual rangefinder in stead of EVF the camera should work as normal even with an adapter which has the traditional cutout. .

It was Firmware 2.0.1 which introduced the "dust protection" and closed the shutter when you took of the lens or used an LTM adapter with cutout.

Since Firmware 2.0.2 the "dust protection" can be switched off.
