Atragon Posted April 3 Share #1 Posted April 3 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I recently got a new Sigma 50mm F1.2 and did an interesting compare with older SL Summicron 50 F2 (the cheap one, not the APO 😉) Here I'm attaching some pictures for your comments. File name includes "Lens - Exposure - F"; all unedited, same ISO (100), manual exposure. Camera: SL3, M-sensor size (7904x4928) Size limit reduces uploaded image quality (any suggestion to best export is welcome) Welcome, dear visitor! Atragon Posted April 3 Author Share #3 Posted April 3 and these (last pair) Apparently Sigma better resolve details, I was a little surprised then... Welcome, dear visitor! jankap Posted April 4 Share #4 Posted April 4 Last pictures: I don't see a difference. Not even in the DOF! Your conclusion?
Atragon Posted April 4 Author Share #5 Posted April 4 as I wrote limit in JPG uploadable size has flattened differences here I screenshot on LR side by side compare: SN is Summicron - DX is Sigma (if I have some spare time I'll publish an Adobe link that may show better details) Welcome, dear visitor! Atragon Posted April 4 Author Share #6 Posted April 4 here 2 other details - SN: Summicron, DX: Sigma differences are either in sharpness and in "look"; Summicron is a bit more dreamy, Sigma is more clinical. I'd say Summicron is better for humans, while Sigma for objects... IMHO they perform very good @ 2.0 F1.2 is another realm though: if you were to choose only one, what would you buy? Emtsoh Posted April 5 Share #8 Posted April 5 The comparison images is not very intuitive, however I tried to understand which lens is which. one (Leica) in “dreamier” as mentioned. The other (Sigma) is sharper. at the end, both lenses perform great. Sigma is nailing it the last years and that is a plus for all of us using SL cameras. on the other hand: I am amazed from the lightweight Summicrons (35 and 50). Great build quality and rendering. Surely more expensive from the (similar formula?) lumix models, but there is a noticeable haptic difference while using these pieces.
wattsy Posted April 9 Share #9 Posted April 9 The Staglieno Cemetery looks interesting. I was in my local churchyard only this afternoon looking at the CWGC (Commonwealth War Graves Commission) headstones there. There is something reassuringly decent about the design and presentation of these war graves and it is quite poignant seeing the names, ages and dates of death. Atragon Posted April 10 Author Share #10 Posted April 10 Hi Ian yes I always appreciate its mood, somehow calming and resetting human perspective in life. Unfortunately it's wearing down because city/state is not investing at all, and it's a real waste. Welcome, dear visitor! SN: Summicron @F2.0, DX: Sigma @F1.2 Comparing lenses at 2.0 and 1.2 respectively is surely not very meaningful ?
Atragon Posted April 10 Author Share #13 Posted April 10 Hi Jaapv, Comparing same aperture is more fair, but I surely appreciate Sigma F1.2 image as well. You surely have lots of experience while I'm just junior on this forum 🙂 But I'm interested to learn a buying decision: if you were owning none of these 2 lenses, what would you choose and why? jaapv Posted April 11 Share #14 Posted April 11 Well, that is a hard one Given that I am quite happy with the Summicron, but that I am very impressed by the lenses that Sigma offers, and that the choice is essentially between Sigma and Panasonic, I honestly can’t say. Photoworks Posted April 17 Share #15 Posted April 17 Sigma and Panasonic have both pros and cons. But the Sigma is optically amazing. Fine details, Wide open, CA, and AF speed. The only con is the price. The Panasonic renders ok, but more like a kit lens, wide open, sharpness is good but not amazing, CA is up to 2.8, Light and fast AF, and it is prob the lowest price for a 50mm in the L family.
