Incredible seperation, you make me want to sell my 50mm Asph. and get the Classic! :)

Yes, thanks and you might want to consider that I was some distance away from the woman in the march so wide open can achieve much more, if you like that kind of thing. It is crazy sharp when you shoot on target. You cant rely on the focus peaking; not that you ever could. There does seem to be (for me) a measure of grappling with focus on either the M10M or SL3S. Its a brilliant lens.

I did a few shots side-by-side against the Lux ASPH v1 before sending the lens back (due to the "play" in the aperture ring) and I can say the differences are quite subtle. In other words, given the image you mentioned, I guess the ASPH would have rendered the same. Or would have given even more "separation" against the background (due to better contrast and sharpness in the plane of focus) since the ASPH does have a more abrupt fall off from sharp to un-sharp. Something closer to an APO rendering versus a more gentle fall off for the non-ASPH.

L.E. The "subtle" differences might be, nevertheless, in part, due to the low megapixel count on my M-P camera (24MPx), but I am sure this was also mentioned by Jamie in his video here (on an M11M):

Stop it Ken,

I want this lens so bad now.. :)

For me it doesn't make sense unfortunately because I have and love the Rigid 50mm for my "analog look" on the digital M. I love the lens and would never sell it, because I also use it on my M3, mostly with black and white negative and a little bit of color (lets say 3-4 out of 10 rolls)

The new Classic lens stays very tempting though.. I just think I can do more of my semi-professional work with the aspherical, it was also significantly lower in price than the classic, a young copy.

Anyhow, if I didn't need a 35mm right now, I would get it next to my aspherical and rigid, I am mostly a 50 shooter anyways.. but something tells me, that would be a little absurd, too :)

Yes sorry about the temptations 😀 I said the same about my beloved 21 Super Elmar lens but I caved in the end and bought the Apo SL 21. The SEM still achieves a look I cherish with the M10M, SL2S and now the SL3S. I made the decision that the 21 SEM could be a walk around Street photography lens and the SL 21 can be used for Urban abstract, landscapes and other work that will benefit from its incredible image quality but too big for spontaneous work. I use the Apo SL 21 on the SL3, a very good combination however it doest always work out depending on the choice of camera and lenses in my bag on that day. Anyway, I dont know if you could work with the same kind of "rationalisation" to warrant the 50 Classic purchase. All the best

PS - I have a few 50 lenses and too many to really use at any frequency. The Apo Summicron f2 50 sits in the pelican case far too long and I love this lens.

I’ve had the chance to play with a Summilux 50 ‘classic’ today for a couple of hours. I must say it reminds (positively) of my ‘lux 50 ASPH black chrome given its density, smoothness in use, and ‘Berg und Tao’’ focusing ring. It is shorter than the ASPH, which is nice and gives a better balance on the M body in my view (I tested it on a silver chrome M11).

I have not yet had the opportunity to look at the files, but I am looking forward to…

I’ve been thrilled with this lens. The weight and focus throw took a little getting used to coming from the 50mm Summilux close focus version, but I really prefer this new classic iteration. The glow is still present and very pleasing when shot at f/1.4. This was taken with the M11-P.

M10M with the Summilux M 50 Classic

A very overcast day as people gather for a rally. I was practiced focusing the 1.4 so I took time to line the shot up and focus using the Evf version 1

I zoomed in on the raw file and could almost read the messages on her phone.

Colors with this reissue are amazing. A bit more glow than the summilux asph and more personality than I thought before owning it and after reading some reviews and comments. For me it is 100% a keeper.

Hi,

Posting this thinking it might be of interest. Full picture just had color adjustments and basic sharpening. Also cropped a detail. Shot at f2,4 on a M11.

I haven’t any experience to compare to other leica lenses but I feel it’s pretty sharp. @1,4 looks are bit different. I’ll se if I can find a picture to post.
