Zeiss will on February 25 launch a new series of lenses and I see it is speculated that this will be a relaunch of the superb Otus lenses.

If so, will they be avaiable in L-mount? I would be surprised if this should turn out to be the case. I see several Chinese lens makers offer L-mount lenses and will have obtained a license from Leica, but Zeiss Otus will be head on with the Leica APO-lenses.

If they’re large, manual focus lenses for a Sony they’re not much competition for the SL APO lenses.

Agreed, but if they should turn out to be autofocus and L-mount, they will be. Maybe mounts will be limited to Sony, Nikon and Canon.

I would buy them, depending of the price ofcourse. Loved the rendering of the Zeiss lenses. AF isn’t important to me, but then, this should be reflected in the price. Especially curious about the 85 and 28.

I don’t think they have any history of producing high quality autofocus lenses. The Otus line was all manual focus, as was Milvus. So I don’t imagine they would be strong competitors to SL native lenses.

If they’re all MF they’d be good alternatives to M lenses on L mount.

The Batis lenses are autofocus and I have not seen anything but praise for the quality of these lenses, but as far as I know they are only available for Sony.

We will see soon what happens next, but since Zeiss has already startet a large advertising campaign, there must be something.

They do, but it's always with a partner. Sony is the most recent, but Zeiss also sold high-quality AF lenses with Kyocera (Contax).

That's the thing. They got lots of praise, but that was when Sony had a weak lens lineup. There were few high-quality native options for Sony. That's not the case anymore, with Sony improving their offer and Sigma selling outstanding mirrorless lenses. Plus, Sony isn't the only mirrorless brand anymore.

Let's hope that these new lenses are available for more than one lens mount.

It is disappointing if that's all there is: manual focus 50/1.4 and 85/1.4.

It's not 2012 anymore, the high resolution market has moved-on. Landscape photographers have traded their D800s and A7Rs for medium format bodies. I'm sure these are great lenses, the kind that a fool like me would enjoy if they were available in L mount, but who else wants these?

... they are even the better alternative, because of the automatic aperture and the open aperture metering

I've been using Zeiss on the SL for a long time - Milvus as a baby-Otus, because I want to have it in the best quality and also manageable and in classic-line with character,

I wonder why Leica doesn't offer manual lenses for the SL itself ...

They probably wouldn’t sell well enough to justify the effort. If they’re after maximum IQ, they already have large native AF lenses available. The size and weight savings from removing the AF probably doesn’t change enough to justify new lenses, given the already available M lenses.

M lenses are not an alternative because you don't have automatic aperture control.

Thanks to the most recent Zeiss Otus ML leak, we know a lot more about these new Zeiss MF lenses currently leaked as available in E/RF/Z mounts. I think these MF lenses would make for a desirable pairing with both Leica SL system and Panasonic S1x system cameras aka L-mount.

There are many, many good lenses available at the moment. To me, there are two main criteria, not necessarily in the same lens:

- weather proof: here Leica shines, but Panasonic is good as well

- rendering: the Lux is sublime, original zooms very good. The sigma 85mm disappointing (to me). So a zeiss 85 would have a chance. Portraits only.

Price is fair to me, but I am not interested in using adapters, so they have to make it L-mount.
