Sign of the times? (pricing used S007)

An established dealer offered me a very clean S007, box, 3 batteries, a 12 month warrantee for (gulp) $3600.  I have an S3 and use an SL2 as my backup body but this sounds like a great deal... for a camera I'll rarely use but have "just in case" (my S3 has been solid as a rock, whereas my previous S007 turned into a brick and Leica swapped it for a new one).

sounds good. Which lenses will you get - that is where the expense is

Why buying a 007 if you already have the S3? It won't add anything to your lineup, and as second body you always have the SL2.

If you ask me, I would either invest those money in some nice S glass that you are still missing (which can also be now found for very good prices) or go for something really "different" in the S lineup like a 006 and her CCD sensor/colors straight out of camera, but that's just my opinion 🙂

 

Or.. you do something even more daring and for exact the same money you can easily find a Fuji GFX100S+the upcoming Kipon AF adapter to use all your S glass with it, you will get even more MPs that the S3, mirrorless AF goodness on the entire sensor plus stabilization of every S lens as a bonus. I'm just waiting for the reviews of the early adopters here to buy that adapter as well (I already have the camera).

Yeah, I appreciate reminding me of the obvious (SL2 as the backup) and the less-than-obvious (Kipon AF Adapter). I looked it up, and it makes no mention of controlling the aperture. What's the story with that?

As far as I know, you should have AF and full aperture control (otherwise it would be almost useless, but no central shutter with CS lenses). It's a one grand adapter, don't think they would charge such a price without full aperture control. If you follow the thread about adapter lenses on Fuji GFX50, one user has preordered it and is waiting for delivery, so we will have soon updates on its actual functionalities and how it behaves on the field.

I started with the S007 and also have the S3.  It is nice in crazy bad weather to mount two lenses and take images without swapping. However, the S-L adapter is pretty slick, so if you were to only take a few S lenses and use the SL as a backup for the S lenses, the adapter might be a good alternative.

The other issues, as you said in the original post, is that you don’t know the condition of the electronics.  I purchased my S3 used, but when I bought it, it had just come back from Wetzlar with a full CLA.  I have had zero trouble with it for 3 years.  So, I build in the wait time and cost for a Germany CLA when I buy used S gear, lenses included.
