Olaf_ZG Posted February 1 Share #1 Posted February 1 Advertisement (gone after registration) Don’t worry, I am not asking you, as I made up my mind already. Most of my private trips I go by car and take a M/Q plus a SL with zoom. Going to an Italian touristic hotspot next week, I will follow @Dr. G: take the Q43 and the 21mm apo (plus 100mm macro cause it’s so light). Normally, I would select one camera when going out and leave the rest in the hotel, though this time I might take it all with me all the time. Very curious how this will be, especially since this is my first real trip since I got the Q and those lenses.
Advertisement Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Hi Olaf_ZG, Take a look here What lens to take?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
PhotoCruiser Posted February 1 Share #2 Posted February 1 (edited) I personally would take only my Q2 28mm, but as you have the 43mm you should add the 21mm what means another camera body. The 28mm and the size of the Q series works just fine for my style of photography but not for all. Honestly i would not take the 100mm as you will not have a lot of use for it as ypu could crop the Q3 43mm to 100mm if needed and i feel that 100mm in a town has not a lot of use for me. Best would be to take only the Q3 43mm with you as you will learn how to use her quickly but maybe miss some WA situations where you can't walk back to get a bigger field of view. However, it's a bit difficult to tell as i have no idea what you want to photograph, if WA is not shot frequently the Q will do all and is small and can be carried concealed in a innocent looking bag. Olaf_ZG Posted February 5 Author Share #3 Posted February 5 Halfway into the (short) trip. Decided to take both with me during the day (which I normally would not do) and used both, simply because I could. BUT, just the Q would have been enough. The once in a while wide shot could be stitched if needed. meanwhile, I almost never see other tourists with Leica, but yesterday I spotted several Q’s and a M. LocalHero1953 Posted February 5 Share #4 Posted February 5 (edited) For leisure trips these days I am finding a Q3 43 and a film camera with one lens (28, 35 or 50) is a happy combination. Together they fit in a small bag with a single partition (Fogg b minor for me), with spare film and battery in the front pocket. In a hotter weather I might take a larger bag with space for a water bottle. The film camera would be a M or Barnack. keeping_a_balance Posted February 5 Share #5 Posted February 5 Interesting choice. I am doing something similar next week, think I will take my Q343 along with an M body with a 21 and 90 small bag, some light lenses and hope for the best. Or I will just take my SL with 3 M lenses... still debating... (I much prefer shooting on the SL than and M body even though practicality of the M body (size/weight) is clear... Elliot Harper Posted February 5 Share #6 Posted February 5 I am facing similar situation with similar equipments. I am going to Amsterdam next month. I am thinking to just bring a SL2-S and two lenses (Noctilux 50/1.2 M adapted, and APO-summicron-SL 28mm). But this setting might be too bulky. Or I should just bring the Q3/43 alone? Olaf_ZG Posted February 5 Author Share #7 Posted February 5 Advertisement (gone after registration) Another day passed, another day against my habit carrying two cameras. Used the Q the most, didn’t touch the 100mm. Maybe 10% with the 21mm. Must be fair though, being in a city, 21mm is not my thing, as I am not doing street photography. Funny thing is, that I miss a M, just because of the experience (and the fact that M equals B/W for me).

I think it's the case most of the time. unless you are out doing exclusively photography, and have two bodies, one will likely be in a bag and the one that is out will likely be the more versatile of the two that will get you ~90% of the shots you feel like taking and for that 10% pulling out the second body, maybe having to change the lens on the second body is just too much work. That has happened with me. However I find that if I have 1 body with multiple lenses I do tend to vary things up a bit more often.... Anyway hope you are having fun which is more important than gear. Olaf_ZG Posted February 8 Author Share #9 Posted February 8 The last day, the SL didn’t leave the backpack. For citytrips a Q for sure is enough. At least for me, though most probably the M will join as well. The SL will remain my event camera and for dedicated phototrips. But for any outing, the Q is perfect. Lesson learned.

Sounds like I need to bring my m11 and summicron 28 then. When travelling with family I intend to use autofocus and 43mm is the widest AF I have now. My SL2-S is with Wetzlar now unfortunately. Or maybe I should go to the store and get a D-Lux8? 🤪
Olaf_ZG Posted February 8 Author Share #12 Posted February 8 I guess Venice is even “tighter” than Amsterdam, yet I felt the 21mm was still too wide. 43mm would do for me, but then, I am more a fifties person.
LocalHero1953 Posted February 8 Share #13 Posted February 8 (edited) It all depends on what you want to photograph, not the location, city etc. (IMO, of course). But then, I never understand these 'what camera/lens should I take to X?' questions anyway! Edited February 8 by LocalHero1953

Last year October when I was in Kyoto with my newly acquired Q3/43, I saw a guy (supposedly British because he had heavy British accent when talking to his wife) also carrying a Q3/43. Later that week when I was in Tokyo Uniqlo lining up for the fitting room, I saw a guy (supposedly somewhere from Northern Europe because he was speaking with his partner in a language sounding very remotely familiar) having a Q3 dangling in front of his chest with super short strap. I guess according to your standard western people travelling to Japan are higher class? 🤪 Edited February 10 by Elliot Harper
keeping_a_balance Posted February 12 Share #16 Posted February 12 Finally went with SL3 with 3 M lenses, 21, 35 and 75. SL3 has a nasty sensor spot on it and is bugging the hell out of me and the 35 has lived on the camera. Really regretting not just bringing the Q343… As traveling with kids the M lenses was not exactly the best to bring either as they are at an age they don’t have patience to wait for much like focusing etc…

What is the nasty sensor spot? I'm contemplating getting a SL3! Used to use an SL601 + 24-90 (all I had), now use a CL with 18-56 which does the job in cities superbly. All the best, Graeme
KitW Posted February 13 Share #18 Posted February 13 Going to Italy in a week and I will take my CL, an 11-23, probably the 35 & 60 and maybe a fisheye.
swatch Posted February 13 Share #19 Posted February 13 travel light is always welcome unless the trip is photo centric which may require wide coverage from macro to telephotos. very often I bring along with manual focus lenses which are in general smaller than auto focus lenses. bring only one prime lens may seem very limited even most often I bring 28mm for M camera. If the destination is only able/plan to visit only once in life time, I will bring a zoom lens TL 11-23 with CL to keep as compact as possible.

All the best, Graeme Actually it's not sensor it's something in the EVF, honestly just noticed it while on the trip, it's still there will have to take it to Leica to check out. Otherwise I love the SL3... In the end I was happy having taking it, pictures were great, did need the wider 21mm lens quite a bit.
