Yes, I was surprised - The captures were hit and mis as some didnt work and appeared as standard shots 8000 x 6000 but retry and persist is good.

Which mode please Ken? I did not have any miss on tripod Multishot myself. Please specify.

Yes handheld needs a fix: enable IBIS. Without IBIS, handheld multishot is not very usable .

You are correct. But today we can do 28 please and with some lenses at least 35 (Sigma Contemp)

I think the multi shots were separated by a standard shot or it could be that my movement was too severe? I dont know. 12000 x 8000 files Image stabilisation on, chose Hand held in menu.  Here is another multishot processed this morning and shot last night.  The car was moving towards me slowly but moving.

Good point. As noise is random, multiple images will reduce the noise signal while maintaining the real signal. Something I use now and then, and a commonly used technique in eg astrophotography. With Multishot (given that things are otherwise working & suited for Multishot), the resulting image will be cleaner than individual images.

Another observation, which may have been the cause of the difference with @jaapv.

Unlike Lumix cameras (S9), SL3-S does not allow handholding multishot in tripod mode. SL3-S detects motion and prevents taking a picture, which is the correct implementation.

Lumix allows shooting handheld in multishot tripod mode (!?!). The result is either a blurry image (no motion artifact removal) or a sharp image (with motion artifact removal) that is a single shot upscaled in the camera. The result is a large file with no benefits (the same noise and resolution as a single shot).

Source for a single shot implementation?  The camera clearly takes multiple shots in both cases;  it is indeed correct that it auto detects handheld. There is but one multishot setting on the control wheel As far as I know motion artefact removal is part of the image assembly software sequence.

Yes, the camera takes eight shots, but the merge/assembly uses only one shot at the end (tripod mode used handheld). You can see it by comparing the saved single shot with the result of the multishot.

Motion artifact removal replaces image parts where a motion artifact was detected with an upscaled version of a single shot. If the whole image is blurred because of motion, either in the scene or because of the camera movement, the entire image is replaced by an upscaled single-shot image.

The same issue occurs with Sony's multishot implementation. A famous ebook author even claimed that Sony a7cr now has a handheld multishot, whereas he was merging with motion artifact removal and got a single shot upscaled image.

Do you have any official documentation that I can read on this?

There are no official documents; the manufacturers are reticent on their implementation details. Most of my knowledge is based on decade-long usage and online discussions of high-resolution modes (handheld and tripod). There was occasionally an official document, but I can no longer locate them.

I participated in a Sony a7cr forum discussion on DPR and ran tests showing how motion artifact removal works (reduction in resolution and increased noise at places where motion occurred). I ran various experiments to learn the limitations and best usage of multishots.

It was new to me that the handheld multishot must have IBIS turned on to work. I did not realize that before, as I have always had IBIS turned on.

No documentation, it is just mainly assumptions.

No. It is experiments, experience and knowledge gathered from others.

I am only looking for Leica SL3S documentation and experience since many others use software for merging the files. The closest are the Panasonic models, but there is a chance Leica still handles the data in a different way while giving one DNG file. I have no interest in jpeg files..

Looking forward to getting my SL3S. In the meantime, here's a multishot from my SL2S. I mostly use the SL2 for multishot work but the files are nice from the SL2S.

This is one of my oldest roses and a favorite, Abraham Darby. Original file was 137.3 mb in 16 bit. SL2S with Sigma 105 macro. Available light F16, 1/25 @ 3200 ISO.

There is a new firmware for SL3-S. Super first test, there seems no improvement on handheld Multishot.

Based on past experiences; FW modifications to MultiShot is likely on a 1/2+ year time scale; anything quicker would be on the plus side...
