Oren Posted January 16 Share #1 Posted January 16 Advertisement (gone after registration) There's a squeaking sound towards the end of the rotation from normal mode to macro mode on the Q3 43 I have. I don't have a filter on nor a hood. Is that normal? It's as if there's some resistance when I turn to macro mode, towards the end of the turn, which causes the noise. If it is new send it back. For US$7000 I would expect it not to squeak.
Oren Posted January 16 Author Share #3 Posted January 16 It's going back to Leica tomorrow. But I'm wondering whether others experience the same rough/squeaky transition when they rotate to macro mode or whether theirs is completely smooth.
fotografr Posted January 16 Share #4 Posted January 16 Did you try oiling it? No, no, no--I'm just kidding. Don't do that.
Cogito Posted January 16 Share #5 Posted January 16 There is no sound on my Q3 43 when rotating to macro mode, just a silky smooth transition of focus marks on barrel.

На мне нет ни фильтра, ни вытяжки. Это нормально? Когда я переключаюсь в режим макросъемки, ближе к концу поворота возникает какое-то сопротивление, которое вызывает шум. When I turn into macro mode, I hear the sound of escaping air, as if the object is smeared with something. Everything is spinning smoothly, there is just some kind of rustle, there is no such thing in Q3. It looks like I've been given a little more lube than I need. M11 for me Posted January 17 Share #9 Posted January 17 (edited) vor 11 Stunden schrieb Oren: whether others experience the same rough/squeaky transition when they rotate Why are you interested in that? Can I conclude that when you read 10 posts here where 10 people tell you that they hear a similar loud squeak when rotating, that you are then happy with your own squeaking camera??? Its a bit boring to come across so many threads like that recently. To me its fully clear that either I do mind the squeak and then bring the camera back to be fixed or else I do not mind. Its certainly without any doubt that squeaking is not normal. If I open the door of my car and I hear a loud squeak should I then open a thread to ask if others have that too? Becaue if others reported it's the same, I would know that this is by design and that there's no point in asking for a replacement and return the camera for a refund. andybarton Posted January 17 Share #15 Posted January 17 Firstly, gents, there is no need to jump on the OP for asking a perfectly reasonable question of the forum members. That’s not the way we behave here. @jaapv When I noticed that my MP ALC had a focusing problem a couple of weeks after I picked it up, my dealer ordered me a replacement to an identical spec. He told me that Stefan D inspected it personally before I received the replacement (which was perfect) but I suspect that was a little white lie. 😊

It seems to me that the creaking and slight jamming when switching to macro mode is not a malfunction.:It's just that one tube rotates inside the other a little tighter than it should. But that's just my layman's opinion. In my Q43, there is also a slight jamming in the middle of the movement. Edited January 17 by Dok67
yren Posted January 21 Share #19 Posted January 21 My Q3 43 produces the same sound when switching into macro mode, just as the OP described. Other than this mild sound—which is barely noticeable in an environment with 50dB background noise I guess—the lens functions perfectly. The switching process is very smooth. So I don’t consider this sound to indicate any malfunction to worry about.
Oren Posted January 22 Author Share #20 Posted January 22 I received an update from Leica: "We just got the camera back from our customer care team who assessed your camera. "They tested and compared your camera to the other Q3 43’s they have, and their feedback is that there is no difference – there is a slight resistance when moving the macro ring slowly, which is due to the internal optics shifting forwards. This is a mechanical operation, so some degree of resistance or noise is expected and they would say this falls within factory tolerances." I'm still perplexed as some Q3 43 users reported that they experience a perfectly smooth rotation.
