Another 'Leica' book subject to book dealers' unjustifiable price hikes is Dennis Laney's "Leica Collector's Guide 2nd Edition". Often listed at extremely high prices e.g., ££hundreds – but shop around and can often be sourced for £reasonable.

Almost into four figures, there are others at less; Leica Collectors Guide: 2nd Edition (Hove Collectors Books) by Laney, Dennis: very good (2005) | PAPER CAVALIER UK

£898.99 then the cheek to add £2-50 P&P 😃

Perhaps the European or US view on these items is not the best one. It seems that there is much more on Leica and non-Leica Lenses in Japanese:

https://www.amazon.co.jp/世界のライカレンズ-ライカと世界のライカレンズ描写を徹底追及/dp/4879560618

If you look for LTM lenses on the website "Camera-Wiki" there are many quotes from this publication:

  • Sekai no Raika-renzu (世界のライカレンズ, Leica lenses of the world). Tokyo: Shashinkogyo Syuppan-sha.
    • Part 1. 2000. ISBN 4-87956-061-8.
    • Part 2. 2002. ISBN 4-87956-065-0.
    • Part 3. 2005. ISBN 4-87956-073-5.

Unfortunately I am not able to read and understand Japanese. To spare the money for expensive books (or perhaps even some lenses...) and spend it on a course in Japanese might be a good investment.

Added to my 1936 Leica IIIa, a Canon f/1.4 LTM lens. It's certainly fast (I know there are 'faster' [1.2, 0.95 "Dream"]) but I think the f/1.4 is a good compromise. Now I can shoot handheld in museums again. 👍

I find that Canon 1.4 lens is better suited to using on a Canon IV body, as it blocks much less of the VF on the Canon.

I know what's in the scene in front of me so even with the internal viewfinder it's absolutely usable for frame edges.

I use a VIDOM for a clear view, and for other lenses (35mm etc.). I just leave it on.

I have the same 50/1.4 Canon lens. I use an SBOOI viewfinder with all of my 50mm lenses on my LTM Leica cameras so no viewfinder blockage with any of them. No issue with the rangefinder either.

I loved my old SBOOI, what a great viewfinder! Alas I use a 3.5cm Elmar a lot and didn't want to also stretch to a SBLOO, so went the VIDOM route instead since it can handle both (and multiple other) lenses.

I do have to change viewfinders for 21mm though.
