I missed your Saving Private Ryan mention which brought up other D day mentions. You were putting someone down by making them look insensitive to our most revered war dead. My comment was also unfair, so I apologize. I shouldn't read forums until after my coffee.

setuporg Posted December 31, 2024 Author Share #182 Posted December 31, 2024 Most folks got the idea of the WW2 footage where handheld cameras are carried by soldier operators, often under fire. I’d use Stalingrad where my grandfather fought but generally speaking these mean no disrespect. Getting back to the point, IBIS really helps videos look smooth. But nothing can beat holding a camera steady! The state of Leica video expertise is abysmal. On my Q2 I could never switch to video easily. Asked in Q forum and clearly single button toggle is not top of mind. At least M240/246 have a dedicated button!
LocalHero1953 Posted December 31, 2024 Share #183 Posted December 31, 2024 TBH I didn't miss the separate button for video when I sold my M240 in favour of CL + SL. I guess I never need to switch from stills to video at a moment's notice, so going through the menu is not an issue to me. In any case I would want to be sure my video settings, which are more complicated than for stills, are properly set up, so I just use a user profile for video. You could try that, then assign user profiles to a button or dial (I don't have a M11, so I'm not sure if you can assign profiles to a dial). I have user profiles for video on both SL2-S and Q3-43. I have the Blackmagic CC 6K, which is L mount, but has taken the opposite approach to the M240 - it has a big video button and a small stills button. It is mainly a video camera, but you can use the still button to take a still while recording video, which is handy.
DadDadDaddyo Posted December 31, 2024 Share #184 Posted December 31, 2024 (edited) Aye, me Bucko, from me excelsior days as a television production engineer (sometime in the prior century): There are at least three kinds of motion to control in video and motion picture production, y'see (outside of subject motion)... Camera motion while still: mount the camera on a worthy support, a tripod or monopod, or place the camera in the hands of an experienced operator or, (even better) have your best camera person use a Steadicam (gyroscopic camera stabilizer). Camera motion while panning or tilting: slooooow down, please! You need to go way slower than you think, for it to look smooth. Believe me. Zoom motion: see above. Again, slooow down, please. All of this has direct bearing, not just for personal video production, but in handling still cameras as well. Move then stop. Move then stop. The proviso in the studio: If your camera tally light is unlit, go ahead and get to where you need to be for your next shot, quickly (before the director needs your shot), then resume smooth operation. When the Director wants to go to you (your camera) (s)he'll say, "Ready, Two," (assuming you're camera two): the person on the control room switcher hits the button to switch your camera to the Air Preview monitor), then, "Take Two," (your camera is switched from Preview to Air, your camera's tally light lights, you're camera is Live). This stuff gets pretty well baked in. To this day, when I watch live TV my brain goes into Engineering Control Room mode... Dip to black after the break, Ready One, Take One, the "Talent's" mouth is moving but he's making no sound..."Open his mic, dognammit!" Old habits die hard. Yes, you can, but the simplicity of the camera does not require profiles to use it. I have all the profiles programed on the SL and that is crucial for me.

One problem was charging them, which turned out to be a problem with one of the original Monochrom chargers. I’ve obtained a dual USB-C charger with LED status from Amazon for a whopping $11 that quickly charged all the batteries and M9 shows them full! The M240 batteries can also be had from Varta and one of mine is even Korean. They last forever still and seem OK after a year’s pause. Please, could you tell me the charger that you found ? I’m searching for my loved Ms ccd.

And since I've listed my M11-P once I got the D, I've decided to sell that one, too. I've kept my trusted pair of M10-R/M, and am very happy to be back using them, alongside M9-P, M9M, Edition 60, etc. Heck I can also shoot a B&W movie with the M 246. Or try film again. I might come back to M11 family as I amassed a Visoflex 2, a few extra batteries and a charger, all of which I like. But for now a break and rest is warranted. Gonna see what bags are in vogue over at the M10 forum! I honestly don't get the D. If you really want a kinda, sort of, not all the way film experience still shooting digital, then just put some gaffers tape on your LCD. And speaking of film, if you haven't tried it in a while, I recommend giving it a try. I bought a cheap Nikon F3, shot some b/w film, flipped for it, and went all in with a mint used Leica MP. Can't say enough good things about shooting film, including the huge brakes it puts on. your process. For me there's still a place for digital which I'll continue to use more than film. But if I were in your shoes, I'd stick with your reliable M10R/M. You're not going to take any better pics with M11. There’s the answer to why people like the D series cameras. For myself, I have zero interest in paying Leica prices for a camera and sticking gaffer tape over it, particularly when the firmware doesn’t have a gaffer tape setting. 😀 2
