AdrianTurner Posted November 7, 2024 Share #1 Posted November 7, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) I hope people can advise me. I am visiting Singapore, Philippines and Japan next month and plan to have my iPhone linked to my LeicaQ3 in order to get the GPS data. I will not use my phone for any other reason. Does anyone know if this will be expensive or fairly cheap - I'd day over £5 per day would be expensive. Thank you.

ejd Posted November 7, 2024 Share #2 Posted November 7, 2024 I'm not sure if this is what you need, but Starhub, one of the Singapore mobile phone companies, offers at tourist e-sim for S$12 -- lasts 14 days and gives you 100GB of data etc etc https://www.starhub.com/personal/mobile/tourist-sim.html I expect the others -- Singtel and M1 -- have similar offerings. Cogito Posted November 7, 2024 Share #3 Posted November 7, 2024 If you’re only trying to get GPS data, you don’t need an internet connection for that. I hike for weeks at a time in the sierra, far from cellular connectivity and get gps data on both my watch and phone.

So I ran a test this morning. I switched the iPhone to Airplane mode, turning off all wifi and internet stuff, connected the Leica Fotos app to the camera and, hey presto, the GPS data was saved to the camera. Amazing. I can now do my Far East trip without worrying about roaming charges. Thanks again.

Personally, I find gps data on photos isn't worth the huge battery loss (on both camera and phone) but for a far east excursion I can see why you'd want to geotag. Have a great trip and take some great photos.

jaapv Posted November 9, 2024 Share #7 Posted November 9, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Save even more on roaming charges by buying a local simcard on the airport. Most phones nowadays support dual sim by making the original simcard an e-sim.

jaapv Posted November 9, 2024 Share #9 Posted November 9, 2024 There are also online companies offering such cards.
Stephen_C Posted November 10, 2024 Share #10 Posted November 10, 2024 If your phone takes eSIMs take a look at something like Airalo. They are possibly a little more expensive than the cheapest local SIM you could buy but incredibly convenient and I've used them and have been very satisfied. Be aware they are data only so not for use making voice calls (although often you can use apps like WhatsApp for calls, of course—so using data).
