Leica M11 features request (in the Fotos app)

Hello all,

Hope everyone is enjoying their M11's. And not off to be repaired or whatever.

I just want to ask the M shooter's who've been using digital M's longer than I have, if you think you have a great idea for the M11's improvements, is it in the Fotos app, under "Feature Request" and send them an email? I think I have a few improvements I think other shooter's would agree could be useful. They never replied my emails so not sure if that's how it is sending email to big corps and never hear from them..

For an example, I do not use the iso dial on top instead I leave it on M. For the function button next to the shutter button, I've assigned it for iso selector. I find it nice to just press left or right to get what iso you want. However, my request for a feature is that the auto iso is far to the left. And you know us M shooters, when we're shooting we want settings to be changed asap, and so I thought if they could assigned the directional dial "up" to go to auto iso and that would be awesome, right? And down would be... can't remember what I came up with (without looking at the camera in hand) but yeah it would be nice if they've give us settings to customize some stuff around. Coming from the x100v, so was used to having the freedom to change everything in the menus.

Your thoughts? Do you have any features you'll like to add? Let us hear it. 😃

you can use the feature request in the FOTOS app. I will go to the same email.

Don't expect an email back, small team and it is better they focus on real support issues. but they do read them.

unlike Fuji, the Leica experience is probably different, back to the basics.

Considering that on the M11 you have the basics or exposure in one top view, Aperture/ISO/shutter speed, you don't need an extra menu for that.

Most people that set the ISO manually, have the ISO dial unlocked and turn it on when needed.

Interesting comment on ISO dial.  On the M11 Mono you can assign the click wheel to select M ISO.  Just push in and turn.  I don't have a regular M11, so not sure if it's an option on that camera.  I find this a lot easier than lifting and turning the ISO dial.  I've had too many over exposure faults on the M1 Mono, all seemingly linked to Auto ISO, so I don't trust that setting any more.

I was under the impression that the feature request via FOTOS is for requesting features for the app itself. Send firmware feature requests by email to info [at] leica-camera dot com. You may or may not get a response, but they will see your request and forward it to the right department.

But honestly, it's been over two years since the M11 was introduced, and it's a little late to expect many new firmware features to be added to the M11. Most of us are just glad to finally have stable firmware!

Right, from the moment I turned on and used my M11, I was surprised how simple the menu was, and I adapted easily since I shot with an M6 for a decade before.

And I am not asking for another menu at all. I was just saying when you're in the iso selector screen (when the screen is black and you click left or right to change the iso) it would be nice if you click up and you get auto because sometimes when you're at manual iso of say 3200, it's a good wait until you reach auto at the far left next to iso 64.

One other thing I would of like to see added would be to remove exposure increments and just full and half stops.

My M11 has not been in for repair and nor have the five other Leicas I have owned.

I think you will find most M-shooters are happy with the iso dial as it is.

I don't want to speak too soon, but mine's working perfectly too.

As for the iso dial, at first I thought it would be nice to use, but it's too slow to operate to pull up for me. Leaving it on M and changing it with the function button works faster for me.

Right, I prefer the directional pad and click and hold left or right as it's faster than scrolling I think. For me, the scroll wheel click in is exposure comp. And by far Leica's scroll wheel feels way nicer than others.

Yeah, it would be so disappointing to pay top dollars for a digital Leica and have to send it back.

You can leave the ISO dial in the raised position, doesn’t hurt anything.

The idea to be able to d-pad up to access Auto while anywhere in the ISO scrolling around is a great idea. Every camera maker should do that as they all are annoying to scroll all the way to auto.

Agreed, that would be a good change. The dial is a little clunky and I just don't end up using it very often. The way I usually do it is just reach over and hit the A with my thumb. It really just acts like a toggle switch for me, as I usually just leave it on 64 unless I change to auto. So if I want to go back to 64, one more touch on the A does the trick.

Another feature I'd requested to them was because one night I wanted to use the timer on the M11 because I saw a mobile home one window was lit while most of the scenes was dark. You know those photos.. and I found a place I wanted to set the camera and take the shot without moving to get few seconds of light in, but the timer would shoot this beam of red light on top of the front RF. There was no way I was going to allow that. So I wish they'll allow us to turn that red beam off, if we like. Or else I'll have to carry my release cable with me. Which in that occasion I did not bring..

In the meantime Gaffers Tape does wonders 😉

True, except you expect me to use 2x2 cm of tape on that general area? Because it's behind the RF glass so I think it will shine through. If you really want to block out any light, that means taping the whole entire RF window 😂 💀

Could be done. I'll just use LV, but seriously, all that trouble though?

Using D-Pad UP to set auto ISO is a good idea. I use the same setup as you with the right thumb wheel press/scroll to set ISO, leaving the top dial on the M setting. Having D-Pad UP set it to auto could come in handy, so why not.

I don't like "hidden" shortcuts that might be activated inadvertently: In my photography experience it is more difficult to reset a function that had been activated on error than to dial through a list of options to find the correct one. And it is very, very easy to press the "up" button while fiddling in the menus.

The main feature I am looking for is a "mass storage" option of the M11's internal memory that would allow me to access it with any file based browser. That would make the internal memory much more useful than it is today (I use it only as a backup feature)

Glad someone else also agreed with me. I mean, I'm not asking for a new menu. Just D-Pad up and activate auto. I mean like even going from say 800 iso all the way to auto take a good few seconds, right? And as mentioned before, it would be useful (to some) if they allow us to choose only half exposure increments to make that list of iso (or exposure comp) tighter to use.

Yeah, it could be something that has to be enabled in the shortcuts menu so those that might find it useful can enable it and everyone else can ignore.

Going from outdoors to indoors and seeing a moment occurring while I'm still at ISO 100, the ISO and focus can both be set by the time the camera is up to my eye. It would take longer and I couldn't be dead certain I'd scrolled enough over to AUTO using just the thumb wheel to be confident.
