V23 Posted October 30, 2024 Share #1 Posted October 30, 2024 Advertisement (gone after registration) Sell SL2-S or Lumix S5II to pair with purchase of SL3? I thought that I would never have to ask for outside opinion, but here I am. Firstly photography is hobby for me, main interest is nature and landscape. I have following lenses SL 24-90, newly purchased SL APO 2.0/50 and couple of Leica M mount lenses that I enjoy using on SL2-S via adapter from time to time. S5II I mainly use for walkaround and travel with Sigma 2.8/45mm lens as well as a backup to SL2-S. I have absolutely no problem with S5II as performance and quality of images goes. Lumix is also 220 grams lighter. Here in Australia at best I could get AUD 3200, (USD 2100, EUR 1940) that is selling it with original packaging as supplied by Leica extra battery, leather half case and L bracket. Camera is in excellent condition. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

Jean-Michel Posted October 30, 2024 Share #2 Posted October 30, 2024 (edited) I do not have any advice re equipment selling or purchasing, but just a few questions for you to ponder. I have an SL2 and am happy with it. I gather that the advantage of the SL2s is its better low light capabilities. I do not do any videos with it so no idea about that part. I print, in-house, up to 20 by 30 inch prints (24 inch Epson P6000). No problem printing 18 mp M9 files, 24 mpx M-P(240) files, Sl2 files, and even 12 mpx Canon 5d files to that size. Not sure if the additional mp of the SL3, or any other larger megapixel cameras would serve my work. And, remember, if you do not print it, it does not exist. Even with new fast computers, processing larger files takes a bit longer, not really an issue, but it takes much less time to redraw an M9 files vs a SL2 file. A question I would have for myself, now that I no longer need equipment to feed myself, is: do I need the SL3, or just want it, a yes to both and I might get the SL3 (or whatever else). An easy way to decide between selling the SL2s or Lumix is to look up your metadata and see which camera is used the most, maybe keep the one you use most. FlashGordonPhotography Posted October 30, 2024 Share #3 Posted October 30, 2024 If You don’t need the money, neither. Get your SL3, shoot it for a month and then decide. You may up selling both. That’s my guess. Gordon
Photoworks Posted October 30, 2024 Share #4 Posted October 30, 2024 the question is where are you going to get the SL3? it is hard to find in stock. I use a few SL2 and SL3 for photos and videos; I like them both. but SL2 is still a good camera.
hoolyproductions Posted October 30, 2024 Share #5 Posted October 30, 2024 I traded in my SL2 for SL3, but I am still on a waiting list after 6 months. I still have my SL2-S and will be keeping it until I see how the SL3 performs in very poor light (I regularly shoot in a particular music bar that has very 'cosy' lighting so I need ISO 12500/25000). Most likely I will keep the SL2-S (i) I believe it will still have a significant advantage for this particular use case, hopefully I will find out soon and (ii) even in good light there is something about the malleability, sharpness and tones from the SL2-S that I (very subjectively) preferred compared to the SL2. Some people believe that Leica really hit the 'sweet spot' with the SL2-S sensor and it will likely be seen as a classic. I don't have the technical knowledge to know if that is hype or not but it does match my personal experiences. (iii) I will have a back up if the SL3 ever needs to go for repair.

For now the SL2-s and SL3 files are about the same in color and noise

For now the SL2-s and SL3 files are about the same in color and noise I don't know yet, I'm living in the moment 😄 I look forward to finding out for myself how the SL3 and SL2-S compare in abominable light, this is the longest wait I ever had for a camera. I also do a lot of shooting in normal lighting conditions so this is really just about my music photography hobby.
LocalHero1953 Posted November 2, 2024 Share #8 Posted November 2, 2024 Who knows where the SL3-S will go? We only have one example of a -S model following the launch model, and I don't suppose at the time Leica expected the SL2-S to achieve its distinctive status. Is the -S a video-based body or a low-light stills body? Will they go for more pixels? Better AF? Better low-light capability? Faster read-out for video? Internal raw video? All these might be possible, but is there a current sensor, and have they got the processor, that will give us all of them? No point in deciding to buy the SL3-S until we know what sort of animal it is.
