Yesterday, two charming Austrian lady school teachers (pic 1, back row, far left) asked me to take photos of their students and teachers group as a memento of their Stamford Lincs. UK visit. They're pictured on Red Lion Square Stamford in front of All Saints Church. I used, "... the lens and camera I had with me at the time ..." – in this case, a Leica CL APS-C digital compact fitted with a 50 years young, manual focus, Canon FD 50mm f3.5 macro lens. There was not time to switch lenses – so I walked back a few steps until the whole group was in the frame. The group is happy with the photos.

The first shot is great. Everyone looking at you, all eyes open, nice expressions. In the second shot, somebody else got their attention. The first image is so much better that it makes me wonder why the second one was posted.

And "back row, far right". 🤭

I agree with member fotografr.

The first is much more what one waits for a photo of class, but on the left, some students are OOF, whereas on the second picture all are in focus, except those who are hidden ( girl second raw and two boys back row) . Pity they don't watch the litlle bird coming out .  And where is the teacher?

Aware pics not perfectly sharp but they serve their purpose and the teachers are happy with them. The second pic was actually the first photo taken by me – when the teacher was photographing the group with her smart phone and they were looking at her – whilst I was trying to find a suitable camera position for my very hastily grabbed camera and lens. My camera was not optimally set up. There is a lot more to this 'exercise' than is conveyed in the first two photos posted, e.g., the teacher's smart phone pix and her semi-selfie of me and two teachers - not eligible for forum posting. Here is another taken by me which conveys some of the students' "enjoyment and happiness" ... even from the young lady who 'blinked'. Photos do not have to be:  "Leica clinically perfect" !! 😃

However,  taking criticisms on board, here's a sharpened pic. No 1:

PS: Note to self: Must not post pix after midnight without very careful scrutiny 🤣!!

And a sharpened pic No. 2 i.e., students looking towards their teacher ...  which should have been the first image posted:

I feel sorry for the girl behind the center person of the first row, she's obscured in both photos.  I apprciate the dificulty of getting the shot with everyone's eyes open.  People just know when you are going to push the exposure button and flinch at that instant.  My strategy has been to tell everyone that I was going to make the picture on the count of three and then actually push the button on the count of 1 or 2...
