Wwin Posted February 7 Share #76 Posted February 7 On 10/16/2024 at 12:10 PM, Ray Vonn said: Well I'm happy this thread has started as for me, 40mm is a great first lens. Because it's not 35 or 50 you'll be having to get to used to judging the framelines on a digital M for composition. But once you're familiar with that you can decide on and be prepared for either of the other aforementioned focal lengths. I used to prefer the 28/50 combination with a 35mm if taking only one lens. But that one lens solution has now been superseded by the Nokton which @3D-Kraft.com has as it's optically correct, can be fast apertured if you want it to be, has the traditional characteristics wide open and is sharp closed down, ie its very flexible and can be used a number of ways, much like a traditional Summilux on which its lens design is based. For such a fast lens, it's also wonderfully small, one of the reasons I use rangefinders. Because of all this, I doubt I need another 40 (a Summicron 40mm will be too similar to me to the Summicron 4 35mm which I already have). As a Sonnar fan, the Rollei 40mm F2.8 was on my radar. My interest in that has disappeared since acquiring the Voigt, but I'm more than happy to be convinced otherwise and hope to see images taken with that lens here. Further, I also hope to see images here taken with the SC version of the Nokton as I own the MC version per the image below. Welcome, dear visitor! Nokton Classic MC 40mm F1.4/ M-E 220 I have the Nokton 40mm 1.4 Classic and love this little lens! Butt framing it, I find it difficult….it shows 50mm framelines when mounted on my M10R, would 35mm be better to see and than compose?? Can I use the lever to see these framelines? Or would that be bad for the camera?

I believe the issue will always be there whether 35mm or 50mm framelines are engaged, it comes down to one's ability to guesstimate when composing.

Can I use the lever to see these framelines? Or would that be bad for the camera? I've probably already written the following in this thread but FWIW; I'd advise using the 50mm lines as a guide and understand that there will be slightly more in the image as captured. I would not use the 35mm lines as one might believe that something will be included only to discover that it had been outside the field-of-view. Better to have more and crop in than assume something will be there when it might not be. You can use the frame-selector lever to check the 35mm f-o-v and it will not harm the camera. That is the lever's whole raison d'être; to check framelines other than those which are automatically selected by the camera-lens pairing.
